Hi Creators,
Starting today, Roblox Kids and Select accounts are rolling out in New Zealand, the Netherlands, Australia, and Indonesia. These account types will go into effect globally in early June, alongside the new publishing requirements.
We’ve seen some questions regarding how this affects publishing, so we wanted to clear up the big ones:
Do I have to pay to publish a game on Roblox?
- No. Anyone who has completed an age check can still publish a game that is playable by their trusted friends and age-checked 16+ users.
- During this initial rollout, all existing games that have at least 500 highly engaged players in the last 60 days will automatically become available for Kids and Select (users under 16, based on its content maturity label) without any publishing fee.
Can I only publish a game if I’ve completed an age check?
- Anyone can continue to publish games for personal use. All creators with edit permissions will still be able to play games published as ‘private’. Starting in mid-June, they’ll need to meet age requirements for collaboration to play ‘private’ games.
- Publishing to those with Playtest permissions will be considered public, and follow the same publishing requirements as other public games.
Do I have to pay monthly to keep my game playable by users under 16?
- No. You only need to pay a one-time, refundable publishing fee (or have two consecutive months of Premium/Plus) if you:
- Update an eligible game after the global June launch.
- Have a new game complete the evaluation process after the global June launch.
- This publishing fee is automatically refunded 90 days after your experience becomes eligible for Kids or Select accounts, or 90 days after payment if it never does. The fee is forfeited if the experience is permanently removed due to moderation.
- If you maintain a Plus/Premium subscription for more than 2 months, you don’t have to pay the publishing fee.
- If you were one of the 100,000 creators who received the 6 months of free Plus, you won’t have to pay publishing fees for as long as the subscription is active.
If my Plus subscription lapses, do I have to pay the publishing fee or restart my subscription for my game to stay eligible for Kids/Select?
- No. You’ll only need to pay the publishing fee (if you haven’t already) or have a 2+ month-old subscription of Roblox Plus if you update the game.
In what scenario would my game fall out of eligibility to be played by users under 16?
- If the game has had fewer than 100 highly engaged players over the last 60 days, it can lose eligibility for Kids/Select. You’ll be notified on Creator Hub if the game is at risk of this happening.
- Games that don’t have an active community or creators are more likely to have potential safety issues; we want to make sure all games that are playable to users under 16 are actively maintained.
- If a game loses eligibility for Kids/Select, it’ll still be playable by age checked 16+ users and trusted friends. It can regain Kids/Select eligibility if it’s had 500 highly engaged players over the last 60 days.
You can check if your game will be available for Kids and Select by going to your game’s Creator Hub dashboard, and navigating to Audience Reach. If your game is already eligible for Kids and Select, based on its content maturity label, it’ll automatically become available for users with these new requirements met.
