SCD's blender odyssey (making AO inspired weapons as I learn)

Due to sheer boredom, a few days ago I’ve decided to learn how to model things using blender, I started with 0 knowledge and watched the infamous donut tutorial just to get a grasp on the basic concepts and figure out the basic tools.

Now, for the past few days I have been trying to make weapons in AO’s style (since they are overall pretty simplistic and newbie-friendly to make), and here is the result of my endeavors for now, most of the things I made are spirit weapon ideas:

My first ever model: simple trashy sword

This sword is very basic even for my 4-days-later standards. The shapes are very simple and it’s not even textured for roblox studio despite being painted in blender, my second model has some slight improvements compared to this one.

My second ever model: A worn down marble greathammer, an idea that I had for a spirit weapon and reworked yesterday (will show up later on this post)

The idea for this one was that the hammer was an ancient weapon made from pure marble and gold and was blessed by hercules, despite being clearly worn down, the spirit-imbued gem embedded on it’s top stopped it from shattering completely.

This is the first instance where I use texture, if you squint your eyes you can see a very faint marble texture on the head of the hammer. The handle has more detail but sadly, it’s normals are all messed up (it’s basically inside out and idk how to fix it). It’s also not textured through an UV map, so it’s just a white block when imported to roblox studio

My third model: Winter’s eye

No fancy story for this one, I just had a thought about making an old candle holder that was repurposed to become an ice weapon, could be a spirit weapon or a magic weapon idk. I had some fun making that snow beneath the orb but got kinda lazy with the icicles on top

My fourth model: The bedrock cythe

An ancient weapon from the olympian era, given to a follower of Hades by the god himself. This weapon carries the riches of the underworld through the embedded gems in it’s handle, and will cleave all of it’s targets with it’s extremely sharp obsidian blade blessed by Hades’ earthen powers

This one took so much longer to make compared to the previous two. This was the first time I traced over a reference image to make the blade and used an addon to add the shattering effect on it. But it’s still not textured tho.

Fifth model: Ancient war horn

A tool of war blessed by Ares to make it’s user’s enemies cower in fear, while increasing the power of allied forces

I came up with this spirit weapon when I though of a more support oriented tool, it looks pretty simple but thanks to it I learned how to use curves a little (I spent some time trying to make it without curves but the results were horrific).

Now lo and behold, this is the first model I textured through an UV map, and is actually studio-ready! the UV map itself looks horrific because I just painted over it like the dungus that I am, but it got the job done.

The model in roblox studio:

And now for the last model I made before creating this post, the rework of the marble greathammer:

The Herculian Hammer:

A weapon carved out of marble and embedded with gold. It’s now unbreakable thanks to the blessing of the god of fortitude, Hercules

Made this one to practice with texture brushes and UV maps, gave me one hell of a headache because I didn’t know roblox only reads 1 uv map per mesh, the gold part was supposed to be a lot more metallic-looking, but this is what I managed before going to sleep, and it is studio-ready too. The marble texture is still pretty faint, I gotta figure out a better way to get textures

This is all I’ve done for now, I’m planning to learn how to engrave things into objects (maybe to make a cool shield idk) and how to use spirals, I’ve been thinking about making a spear with a snake spiraling around it.

I will be using this thread to show my progress, If you read this and have cool ideas of items for me to model then please share

Wow that’s awesome! This looks like a great step in the direction of modelling, so keep it up :D!

I remember when I first started out I kinda just made weapons based on this random weapons generator since it you get to design the whole weapon yourself.

I think my favorite one of the bunch is the Winter’s Eye so far, it’s a unique idea that I haven’t seen so far :0

Awaiting the day you go the path of JTN and start getting your models in ao.

The several donut tutorials can contain a lot of intimidating information that you probably won’t make use of, the sword tutorial is far better when it comes to efficiency.

You can skip straight to part 2 of this tutorial to get to the sword part

Yeah I watched one and stopped halfway through once the basic stuff was over (the donut tutorial)

This is great progress bro :+1:

One thing I’d learn asap is texturing. It’s so useful for adding small details to models without inflating the polygon count and overall just makes the model so much better

  1. bruh these suck they can’t go in AO :sob:
  2. not bad
  3. peak

Also what textures are you using?

Nothing specific, I just look for better-looking textures with good resolution

yeah I saw there is a lot to it, I’m focusing more on the modeling part rn but I’ll try to look over it in the next few days

I made a samerian shield:

starting to get somewhere with the textures, I wanted to add some scratches to the orange part but couldn’t find anything good on the internet (for free)

Someone who actually know how to use blender?

I tried for a week but I can’t even make a blender donut

I don’t really know anything lol, things take some time to make and I mess up a lot when I try new things

Winter’s eye as a spirit weapon would go HARD

also this is a really good idea. I’ve been having blender classes at college and i should put it to good use lol

Please image your meshes, this is ungodly.

the main shield part IS shade smoothed, shade smooth kinda mades it ugly since there aren’t many triangles in some parts, like the sun beams in the shield

Shade smooth is for applying textures. Without textures it looks goofy yeah

The Serpent Spear

Originally an ordinary spear, it’s previous owner wrapped it with the carcass of an emerald skin serpent, enhancing it with traces of it’s magic energy

Tried sculpting for the first time to make the snake head, I think it turned out pretty alright for a first attempt

Also figured out some things about texturing, but still looks pretty crappy in some parts, will def come back to re-texture this when i’m better at it

We committing animal abuse with this one warrior bros!

not out of the ordinary, we already do
how do you think we get the poison tooth dagger?
that and the atlantean mace uses a urchin as its head, and the scald tooth dagger is ALSO a tooth ripped from something.

just because we already did, doesn’t mean that future perpetuation isn’t bad
