Very nice looking snow

edible snow

You’re probably the best artist right now, at least in terms of detail-female characters
Also imagine how powerful pearl is… Ever seen one of those hydraulic press videos where a glass ball is pressed, then after surviving tons of weight it explodes into millions of shards, capable of dealing immense damage, some sort spell called “immense pressure glass balls”.

Never get tired of winter themed art.

A colorful pink and red high saturation color contrasting with the low saturation of the blizzard caught my eye directly, with beautiful hair and accessories flowing through the wind that communicates the severity of the snowstorm.

And her eyes squinting to minimize debris is a nice detail that adds more charm to it.

An absolutely wonderful portrait about a stunning woman but I feel like this portrait is hiding something very tragic beneath.

The first thing that drew me into this portrait is Pearl’s face. She seems familiar, I feel that I have seen this face before, she reminds me of Noelle Taiga in a very odd way that I can’t really describe. Nonetheless, both are equally majestic women that deserve happy lives.

That said, Pearl’s beauty is contrasted by her expression which is quite hard to break down. It seems to be sadness yet at the same time, regret. Pearl looks like she is contemplating something, something that she feels guilty doing. She is walking in the snowstorm, away from her past action behind yet she still cannot abandon what she had experienced.

Pearl is wearing a pink Victorian winter gown. I spent a long time scrolling through the AO forum art topic from late December 2023 to mid June 2024 and found out that pink is an extraordinarily rare color for character’s clothing. To me, it means that the clothing Pearl is wearing is very expensive that very few can afford, kind of something like tyrian purple in the past. I suspect that Pearl comes from an aristocratic family with immense wealth.

This portrait leaves a lot of mystery about Pearl and her conditions before this walk in the snowstorm. Until, the most recent portrait of Pearl…I’ll call it the dark portrait from now on.

Pearl was wearing well-crafted silver jewelry and a tailored grey gown. Her skin looked as smooth as marble. The moon projected its light on to her which makes her radiate like a high-quality piece of crystal. Her hair was signifcantly darker in this portrait but it could be the work of the night sky to emphasize her youth. Pearl’s beauty was one of a kind, the kind that not only humans were attracted but even Mother Nature herself was jealous of.

Nevertheless, Pearl’s expression and demeanour didn’t seem to match with the majestic of her beauty. She seemed reluctant to accept something and was resting her left arm on her breast as an indication that she was protecting herself from this something. These, coupled with the fancy gown she was wearing and the dark background, make me believe that the dark portrait is depicting Pearl as a bride and she is walking out a dark room toward a balcony where “her spouse” is standing. They are about to enjoy their honeymoon together and will marry and live happily ever after, or so I thought…

I looked at the portrait again while writing this and discovered that the artstyle of the two portrait are drastically different and that Pearl’s facial expression, upon deeper inspection, is nothing. I suspect that the dark portrait was drawn from the perspective of the spouse, or rather, how he perceived Pearl. To put it bluntly, he viewed her as nothing more but an expressionless doll, too weak to do anything by herself and he was free to decide her fate to whatever he might please and she wouldn’t budge even once if he does so.

In addition, as far as I am aware, she is the strongest glass curse user in history. This, combine with the previous factors, convinced me that the dark portrait is potraying an arranged marriage even if it doesn’t explicitly show to the viewers all of the details. Pearl never loved “her spouse” in the first place, she was simply forced into the position of being his bride because of her power. Whatever was about to happen after the night depicted in the recent portrait will be horrible. It is a tale of abuse, manipulation, depression and a testament to how resilient Pearl’s spirit is.

Even so, each human has their limits and Pearl is no different. On one day, “her husband” pressured her into doing something that she could not bear seeing the consequence. All the punishment that Pearl has endured built up and then burst. She suddenly unleash a calamitous glass blast or explosion that shredded “her husband” and anything around him. However, in doing so, she also indirectly ended the lives of the thing she wanted to protect which shattered her heart. She deeply regretted her action and wondered if she even had a heart to begin with. She accepted into being someone’s doll and failed to protect what she loved. She is now alone and forever carried the pain of her fallen loved ones.

I think the snow portrait is depicting the aftermath of Pearl’s outburst. She is walking away from the place that used to be her home. The pink winter gown that she is wearing is a reminder of her loved ones and it acts as a barrier to hide away the multiple bruises and scars caused by “her husband”. Perhaps that throughout her marriage, the only thing that kept her from going insane was the loved ones. Now that Pearl is alone, she wonders how she could be with her loved ones once more and why she was chosen to have the glass curse.

I think the change in artstyle between the two portraits indicates the flow of time. Pearl in the dark portrait/Pearl of the past has no freedom but she had someone to look to but Pearl in the snow portrait/Pearl of the present has freedom but no one to look to.

Overall, the two portraits tell a lot about the condition of a curse user. They are viewed nothing more as a tool to do someone’s bidding and be put in whatever status the user may please. I guess this explains why in the current AO storyline, all curse users are either political or military leaders. The tools don’t want to be used anymore, they want to control their users. In some way, this reflects the irony of tools, we invented or adopted tools in hopes that it would give us more freedom but in reality, the tools have ruled over us for a long time. If a tool does not stand up against its user, it’s simply tossed away by its users without much thought, leaving it isolated and sad.

I have gone overboard on this and spent nearly 2 hours writing this. May need to delete this post if it’s too disturbing for people.
