LONG ASS MAGIC EXPLANATION!!!

“magic” as people call it today is derived from the soul

humans are not the only things with souls, quite the opposite; all organisms, even bacteria, have a soul

the only difference is that the soul of a bacterium is orders of magnitude weaker than that of a person

souls are inseparable from the body. if the soul is somehow removed, near-instantaneous death is almost guaranteed. there would be no discernable cause of death other than the fact that the body is now a rotting pile of ash on the floor

as the size of an organism increases, their soul’s power will generally increase alongside it. the souls of highly intelligent beings such as people and various mythological creatures were intentionally made much more powerful to fill specific ecological niches. every creature with such a powerful soul is capable of using it to alter the world in some way, which is literally the definition of magic. different creatures have different types of magic which affect the world in specific ways. sea serpents, for example, are able to boil water in their mouths to use it as a weapon

as for humans, their “niche” is essentially to act as the custodians of the rest of the world, so their magic is the most versatile and powerful, able to alter nature much more directly. what they started out with was what could be most easily described as an elemental magic system, able to bring forth, manipulate and transform into various familiar substances and phenomena such as fire, water, stone, clouds, plant matter, and many more. human magic generally appears as flame-like structures, although vapors and electricity-like bolts are also quite common

things were fine for a while in early human history, but they did the most human thing ever and started hurling natural disasters at each other

the ones responsible began to form a “shell” of corruption around their souls, not damaging the soul but preventing the person from using their powers. worse still, this corruption is hereditary. the low human population at the time combined with the fact that they were releasing very poorly timed volcanoes on their neighbors meant that this corruption spread like wildfire

soon, not a single human would lack this shell. for a few thousand years, people just lived normally, using technology to get things done without resorting to being gods

people were, however, still aware of the existence of magic. they could see magical creatures, and heard the legends about mighty cavemen raining fire upon other cavemen

eventually a number of alloys were discovered (combining heavy metals with crystallized magic yes thats a thing that exists and is also used in modern technology) that could bypass the corruption and allow a person to access their magic again. the way it works is; by using the properties of the metal, a person can subconsciously force their magic through the shell to control it (very talented magic-users can also do this without the metal but its insanely difficult and the magic is usually immaterial, only able to do rudimentary tasks)

unfortunately, only some people can use magic this way. not all corruption is made equal. to be able to use magic, someone’s shell must be malformed in some way. in most magic-users, it’s simply weaker than usual

another weird property of corruption is that, by forcing magic through it, it changes the color and brightness of magic. magic is ordinarily bright white. corruption acts as a filter, only allowing certain wavelengths through

magic conducted through metal is better than early magic in most ways. its much more controllable and can do a lot of things that early magic simply cannot. however, it adds another layer of complexity that makes magic less of an inherent attribute of the human species and more of a skill that must be mastered.

one final thing. all magical species are impervious to their own magic, as well as the magic of their own kind. this is true for humans as well. to attack someone with magic meant forcing nature to harm your enemy. nowadays, people can inject the power of their corruption into magic to make it harm others. since its ever so slightly different from their enemy’s shell, it can harm them but not you.

Quick question: are humans in this verse bound to one “element” or can they use any with enough practice?
