Steep Steps: A review on a game that tests your sanity

Steep Steps is a game on Roblox where you scale a (as of now) 700m tall mountain with only a ladder without jumping and some bonfires as checkpoints. There are side quests around the mountain that reward you with a badge and some occasions a skin for your ladder, currently 4 in the game (5 if you count the event badge).

My Experiance:
0-100m

This is the baby steps of the game, it introduces you how to use your ladder by knocking it over, keeping it up and pushing it across a narrow slit to continue up. Here is where most people quit since a mechanic where you lose your ladder either by falling down on a solid surface or luckily into the void come outs with two outcomes.1. Is where you have to jump down to retrieve your ladder or 2. You ladder respawns and comes back to you. There seems to be a mix between people who are helpful and are just assholes, they could either help you using their ladder or knock it off and block important progression points.

A real frustrating part was during the ending of this section from 70-80m was when they introduce the ladder slit areas (there is a lot on the mountain), I had trouble learning this since my ladder kept falling down, including with a couple of friends such as Kwispye and Mars. There was this really risky second ladder slit where the void was underneath unlike when they introduced it. (this happens a lot with the ladder slits). It took me 30 minutes to pass it to move onto the first bonfire. You can also find the Helpful Soul NPC quest in the mineshaft under the 60m split.

This concludes this section.

100-200m

This is the second section of the game where it introduces more advanced ladder technique such as temporary ladder bridges, where you slide your ladder to the edge to the point where it falls and fills the gap acting like a bridge. This section is fairly easy if you learnt how to slide your ladder across slits and fill gaps. You can also find a Golden Ladder required for the helpful soul quest but you should reach the 200m bonfire before grabbing it and returning it to the NPC.

This concludes this section.

200-300m

Before you climb, there is a NPC inside a house that gives the MAILMAN badge, talk to him before going to 300m. There a few frustrating parts while scaling this section such as the introduction to ice, pretty self explanatory but this is much more frustrating and mind numbing since you cannot jump and your ladder slides with the ice. Other then that this should be fairly difficult to pass if you learnt the tricks from before. At the bonfire, go to the blue house and talk to the person inside and give the letter to them, then come back down to 200m bonfire and talk to the MAILMAN NPC and get the badge.

This concludes this section.

300-400m

This part was the dread for me on the first day I was playing, before I learnt how to properly do the ladder slit slide, I just walked across and summoned the ladder, it did not also help there was ice during this section as well, so I get slipping and falling off before I called it a day. On the second day to continue this game I mastered the ladder slit slide while playing with Tobi, Mars and Kwispyee and this section was a breeze but a little difficult. At the bonfire there is a NPC in the lake which gives you the FROZEN RIVERS badge, just go to the guard, get a blow dryer and touch the NPC with a blow dryer.

This concludes this section.

400-500m

This section was a easy as well since I learnt most of the games mechanics although some parts were infuriating such as a section where you have to use your ladder to cross through a gap and bridge part, the gap was fine but my ladder kept falling through the bridge gap and I had to retrieve many times before passing.

This concludes this section.

500-600m

This section was so dreadful, there were so many gaps and bridge gaps you had to do and my ladder sometimes fell down forcing me to reset or grab it. It took me 30 minutes to pass this because of how many time I had failed the bridge and normal gaps. There is also a Santa NPC that rewards you with the HOLIDAY HELPER badge and festive ladder at altitude 530m (note he is not at any bonfires just only this altitude), he gives you 4 coloured presents that you have to give to elves spread across the mountain, this was kind of challenging but I eventually completed it. There is also a elf at the bonfire both 500m and 600m.

600-700m

The final (current) stretch, you have to cross a very long bridge to get to the climbing area so dying was not looking so great, this one I had gotten lucky on since I did not die while scaling this section. It was a simple but harsh breeze but I eventually went to top of the mountain and went to the bonfire. Completing the game. Steep Steps was a perfect simple but mind numbing game but sadly only had a few hours worth of content, I hope more badges and new altitudes great then adding 100 m at a time is in the future. There is a NPC at the castle that gives you THE SNITCH badge and molten ladder, talk to him, go outside the castle, take a left turn 3 times before jumping down a hole and talking to the bandits. Return to him and get the badge.

This concludes this section.

Final Verdict:
Steep Steps was challenging and unique obby tower removing jumps and replacing them with ladders, the way they made you make bridges and slid ladders across was very original but sadly the game had enough content for a few hours of play time. So I rate the game 8/10

P.S @KwispyKage hates the ladder slit slide parts because she always falls lol.

is there a strategy for ladder slits or is it just hoping your character sticks out far enough that the ladder doesn’t clip and pushes you into the void?

I just did the second option a bunch, but place your ladder at the start of the slit, angle yourself 45 degree to the ladder and push, that worked for me.
