Studio Build: Asterios Labyrinth

MagicDragon16 gave the exact reason. It’s the original Greek Minotaur story and I thought it’d be a cool name to reference the Minotaur skeleton in the middle of the labyrinth.

Why so?

Tobi cooks once again. You rlly should make a place to showcase ur builds, they always look so fun to explore.

I should start making studio stuff on art.

wow tobi you’ve been replying for a while

Summary

It’s multifactored, but the main reason was Inconsistent communication between builders that’s built up to feel very frustrating. To me at least, it felt, and still feels like, builders are not being taken seriously.

The people who I talked to have offered up reasons, like how we’re not hired on help so there are no expectations for builders, yet recently when Vet responded to a topic saying he needs a team, he specifically called out builders and recent examples of our work added in this update as a reason why he doesn’t work with people.

Vetex needs a team - Game Discussion - Arcane Odyssey

It was incredibly frustrating to read because at least a day or so before he made that post, I asked on behalf of builders what steps we could take to ensure that Vet could implement builds more smoothly. This request stemmed from a builder’s feeling of being degraded when Vet complained about the errors they encountered while adding their build to the main game. It felt demeaning to have builders singled out as an example of why Vet prefers to work alone, especially considering the effort we’ve invested in creating the best builds we possibly can for AO.

This frustration is also reflected in our interactions. When builders attempt to communicate with Vet, responses are not always forthcoming. If we try to continue the conversation, it feels like we’re being shut down with no responses.

For example, Misinput @ ed Vet if he wanted the file for Asterios, but after 8 days, there’s been no response. This was initially made in the builder chat on the 24th of April. I’ve discussed this with Misinput, and she confirms that she only tags Vet for significant inquiries and bug reports, yet she experiences even more inconsistency in responses, often receiving none at all.

I’ve asked about other builds on several occasions, but the responses have been inconsistent. Some remain unanswered, while others have left me even more puzzled after receiving a response. The only consistent aspect of communication is that builders are consistently required to initiate and inquire; otherwise, it’s doubtful we’d receive any response at all.

While I understand Vet may be busy or facing other complications, this lack of communication happens frequently. It feels as though we pour a lot of effort into building, yet don’t receive the same level of engagement from Vet. The builds I’m about to share have been completed for months, and despite posting progress pictures for months, I’ve never received any direct feedback or acknowledgment for most of them, leaving me feeling in the dark. Only recently have I actively pushed for more communication by tagging Vet and seeking clarity on behalf of all builders. However, it still feels like an uphill battle.

I’ve decided that this system isn’t the right fit for me. I think I’ll be happier by sharing these builds and focusing on other projects instead. This decision isn’t a reflection on Vet; I recognize that he has many responsibilities to manage. I’m choosing to move on because I’ve realized that building for AO is not what I want.

You should, building in studio is fun and might even be a gateway into blender which I’ve been wanting to tap into.

I’ve been thinking about it. Maybe after I post all my builds, I’ll create a showcase with JTN.

While not the same subject, I’ve heard that the balance team has the same type of problems, Vetex is consistenly ghosting them, vetoing their proposed changes without giving reason, refused acess to the game’s actual numbers and formulas, misimplementing stuff, and actively ghosting them too.
From what I’m heard all around, most people that work with Vetex seem to have trouble communicating with him, he either ignores thems, or when he responds, really doesn’t listen.
I see this as an extremely negative thing for the health of the game, if Vetex can’t sustain proper communication with the people that help him, I fail to see why they would keep helping him, and in my personal opinion, he needs that help, and more of it actually in alot of domains.

Vetex needs a quality dev team above all else, then we’d get good looking armor that’s not just a reskin(for once) and he’d not be so overworked cuz developing this game on your own is crazy

oh my goodness gracious

Regarding the balance team, I understand why Vet would want control over that aspect of the game, particularly since it directly impacts gameplay. However, I’ve heard about the lack of communication with the balance team, and although it may not be as severe as it is for builders, it’s still been frustrating for me to try to communicate and advocate for better communication without seeing any improvement. It has, at times, made me contemplate leaving altogether.

I considered bringing it up directly with Vet, but instead, I focused on what I could control, which was being more proactive about trying to understand Vet’s needs. Perhaps I should have expressed my feelings to Vet, but given his responses to others, I hesitated to open that can of worms as I don’t think it’s my place when I can simply just not build. Which I ultimately decided to do.

I’m pretty bad at modeling so far but at least I can make a sword ;-;

Last time I tried I made some sort of 5th dimensional analog horror and just gave up

I looked at the Vetex post, he seems REALLY angry there

I don’t believe that’s the case at all. It’s clear that Vet works most effectively with minimal outside influence shaping his vision. Personally, I feel that the game’s scope has been exaggerated before early access release and has continued to be so even as new content is introduced. There seems to be a significant disconnect between players and Vet regarding what content to expect, resulting in frequent disappointment (like with the Dark Sea and Nimbus Sea). I don’t think most players are being entitled when they express a desire for more content or advocate for additional polish. I honestly think the scope of the game has led many to believe that AO will be bigger than it can actually manage to be—at least not for a while.

In my view, Vet doesn’t necessarily need a development team, but there needs to be better management of expectations regarding upcoming content and time frames. Teasing future content should be kept to a minimum if done at all. The focus should strictly remain on detailing what will be included in each update, as players have often been teased with future content like spirit weapons and lost magics while the current content is still being developed. Sometimes, it’s better to keep your plans close to your chest.
