YO THIS IS SO GOOD, I love lore-type stuff like this!

I theorize that sea monsters are created when regular sea life swims in the Dark Sea for an extended period of time. They soak in all of the magic pollution in the waters just by being in it, until they’re extremely mutated, growing in size, changing in color, and sometimes gaining elemental properties (like the light of Obolus’ esca or the poison in Poison Jaw’s teeth).

They then swim back into the War Seas, still heavily mutated. This would probably have severe effects on the food chain and population of other sea life, with mutant sea monsters having no competitors whatsoever. This is why it’s important for humans to hunt sea monsters, not just to keep themselves safe but to keep their food supply as well.

Magic pollution could probably be passed down genetically as well, so a White Eyes who mutated in the Dark Sea could lay eggs that hatch into more White Eyes from the get-go. I imagine it’s difficult for sea monsters to find suitable mates, though, since there’s so much size variance and rarity. And since they over-eat so much, it’s not very sustainable to have a pair of two compatible sea monsters staying with each other for very long, otherwise they would extinct all of their potential food in the sea for miles.
