Personally, I’m a bit iffy on using generative AI specifically for coding. If it was ‘normal’ AI (aka just running on algorithms instead of being a LLM), I would be fine with it because at least the can’t ‘mess up’ so to say. With generative AI though they still make mistakes even though you explicitly stated to avoid that mistake.
If you think about it the same thing happens when you code fully manually; it just takes longer to re-iterate over using AI to make whatever corrections.
Besides, AI is also good for asking about how code works (it gets this right almost all time time unless something is nested like 10+ functions calls deep, to which then you would need to follow-up with your own review or ask it to investigate specifics further). It is actually how I learned a lot of how certain programming concepts and good techniques work.
One other thing: the action of writing the prompt should be enough to force you to learn what is going on at least on a surface level so that the AI has a good starting point for whatever you want to do. It is also good to review the code for particularly significant changes so that you can verify that it is done the way you want to, and to always test after.
aren’t most models recolors anyways? and the other models are made by other devs (ex. arcanium weapons being made by galaga iirc)
The thing about effective live coding is the fact that it doesn’t do outright everything for you perfectly. You still have to plan everything out, debug the code (mainly because AI is stupid and will make stupid mistakes) and anything else related to coding ((basically the other things lord meta specified, you need to have real knowledge on coding before stepping up to live coding, unlike how it is with the art and music AI slop..))
I haven’t seen the message sent by Astral, but trying to use live coding as an insult even though Ript’s optimizations turned out really great and already to proven to be effective is really funny, but well they’re a modeller for the game after all, not a scripter for what i know
If vetex is going to keep shitty people like Astral in the team then people have all the right to continue bringing it up
Y’know now thinking about it this was possibly one of the worst ways to try and slander ript, like if you prove that he didn’t vibecode anything then that means you just slandered a dude for no reason. But if you did prove he did vibecode then that means an ai was able to optimize a game better than the lead developer to some extent
Please delete astral’s custom and his dragon
And then give it to Tobi
Tobi is gone tho
We do it in memory
tobi has been gone, no shade to sentera they are great but i lowkey miss tobi’s soundtracks ![]()
Sure but in the long run what does complaining in the forums gonna do? Its kinda just beating a dead horse now.
as much as i wanna not say it astral works is kinda the whole reason this drama blew itself up mainly due to the fact of baseless accusations against riptides.
That’s what the forums are for, only a few mods pay attention here but otherwise no one cares, the suggestions are dead af, i think they do get a lil bit of attention but not that much.
tbh yeah. Forum’s aren’t dictated heavy, I just posted something and I won’t get muted for it. I said something on similar grounds in General & got muted for an hour & a half LOL.
Plus people that are actually on the forum’s aren’t run of the mill average AO players, usually player’s that care more about the game.
Yeah the AO community is divided in three parts (not accounting for dev team): The elite (patreon), i’ve heard they are hiveminds but otherwise no idea. The peasants (general chat), too chaotic so i don’t know much about them, i don’t bother to talk there. The forumers, may have a redditor/4chan complex without the doxxing. (because that’s done in the leaderboards)
astralworks caused massive drama, got defended by mods and moochezz, and is now contradicting himself with screenshots that anyone can pull up. you don’t deny something that’s already been seen. that’s just stupid and dishonest. and astralworks just keeps making it worse every time he opens his mouth.
what makes it actually infuriating is that vetex took this long to say anything and when he finally did it was the vaguest possible version of the truth. yes ript used AI, no he wasn’t vibecoding, tech said something that wasn’t accurate but he was busy so whatever, astral apologized to ript privately so it’s resolved apparently. no accountability for how this was handled publicly, just clarifications ending with “believe me if you want”, after this long?
there’s a massive difference between using AI as part of your workflow and letting it do everything for you. ript used it as a tool and produced results nobody on that team had managed in three years. astralworks picked that specific word because of how it sounds, not because it was accurate, and then denied saying it with evidence sitting right there. a modeller with apparently no understanding of how scripting actually works decided to weigh in on another dev’s coding process and blew up the community over it. the accusation was already misleading. the denial made it embarrassing. the fact that he still has his role makes it insulting.
astralworks has value, sure. modelling is real work. but modellers exist elsewhere. finding another one isn’t impossible. what’s actually hard to rebuild is the community’s trust in a team that can handle itself when things go wrong. he burned through that and vetex is acting like a private apology to ript makes it resolved. it doesn’t. being useful doesn’t make you untouchable and right now astralworks is testing exactly how far that goes.
One of the few things the general populace is based in regards to.
