hecate shards being used to mutate is a feature in arcane odyssey that exists exclusively for gameplay purposes, such as the prometheus’ acrimony. In the actual lore, hecate shards were used to create new magic types that people could then access following their creation. The mutation process is the same throughout the entire AU, and not just the seven seas.
In addition, while the meme shown here displays the usage of hecate shards as an “easy way” for mutation, not only does it NOT actually do that in universe, as we’ve established, as a person in the arcane universe you’d be lucky to even know of their existence considering various factors such as a being’s soul only having so many pieces to it leading to limited supply of hecate shards, durzacheron’s butthurt bomb blast setting humanity back by god knows how much, and the literal magic-irradiated wasteland hell that takes up a good majority of the planet. You’d be better off pushing yourself to mutate the normal way.

So mutating without hecate shard is much better bcz u learn things instead of gifted?
it’s better because hecate shards are rare, and it would be a waste of such a valuable material if you used it just to mutate
also yeah, earning it with hard work would prepare you better to actually use it
I imagine the guy who used hecate shards to create death magic went something like
“wow, that blast was crazy strong! did you see that, gary?”

couldn’t you use a hecate shard to mutate into an existing magic by just creating a new magic that already exists
to mutate without one though you need to have a specific bloodline, and then the mutation you get is based on whichever one your ancestor made. i imagine using a hecate shard would give you more freedom in your mutation
