The Nonsensical Deckhand Upgrade system

As someone who values the aesthetic of my crew of deckhands, It’s quite disheartening to see how nonsensical their upgrade system is. Because of their ‘level progression’ Deckhands can end up costing absurd amounts of renown to upgrade, and thus making the entire system irrelevant. Why would you upgrade a deckhand when a pregenerated one is of equal quality, and cheaper to boot?

Some crazy people will say “Oh well your Deckhands level up so they cost more”, and that’s just silly. Level up? What purpose does that matter? Their stats to my ship aren’t increasing, and they sure as hell ain’t helping me when I board an enemy ship. It’s frustrating to find some really cool looking deckhands and basically be told “Well farm an insane amount of renown or just drop them all together.”

Meet Dominguez, a one eyed boxing Deckhand I found at Rookie level, who wears a cloak and hood that looks like the kind of thing Boxers would actually wear before a match. He’s awesome. I like him. Now look at his cost to upgrade relative to his stat given.

Now look at this random NPC I found that is one tier ABOVE Dominguez, and compare their costs for yourself.

I am not really trying to write an angry rant here, I just want the upgrade system to make more sense.

well one is a rookie one is adept but i get what ym

As someone who farmed infamy without any cheats and got to 300k, i honestly just think that Deckhand system is bugged. I think they accidently added 0 at the end of cost for each deckhand.

I saw a lvl 50 deckhand who was giving like 230 ram strenght and rare deckhand who was giving 253. 23 STAT DIFFERENCE FOR :poop: TON OF FAME DIFFERENCE.

Upgrading a Rookie TO adept takes double what it costs to just hire an adept in the first place.

I once met a deckhand that required 1.2m to hire him

its even worse for deckhands that give a low amount of stats for example speed, because upgrading them and leveling them up makes literally no difference
a rookie deckhand would give 4 speed while a fully maxed out legendary deckhand would MAYBE give 6?

Deckhands are just a fun little thing to see the cool characters I could get on my ship… the actual crew does the work :stuck_out_tongue:

Change the title to ‘The nonsensical deckhand system.’

honestly they should lower the fame requirement imo

divide fame requirements by 10 or 5

or up the stats given

If I recall, Edward Kenton gives you 300 ship defence and small buffs to resilience and other stats when you upgrade him via his quest later in the game.

You can find him on the island north of Dawn Island at the start of the game

Kenton is a quartermaster not a deckhand

yes but isnt it odd that a guy you can get by fishing up 20 fish as early as level 1 is miles better than these 100k+ fame/bounty deck hands, even if they’re upgraded?

I’m specifically moaning about the upgrade system here.

Fair enough

Let’s be honest, deckhands need a rework. They need you to start a religion in your name to be considered famous enough. :frpensive:

lmao. my rookie deckhand provides a speed boost to my ship by 4 and my adept deckhand that i upgraded to elite deckhand has a speed boost of 4. It really is just bad. I just upgraded for cool purple name on my deckhand
