The PVP toggle will ruin the game. Here's my idea for an alternative that will 100% please everybody

the thing about minecraft is, generally, you understand the danger you are putting yourself in by not being in peaceful mode. now, freshies, who most likely dont know that because they are now level 50 mr goblin here is going to murder them, will probably be turned away from the game

couldn’t the toggle just be added for people below the max level, then? Also, aren’t ganks on low-levels exceptionally rare? (And on top of that, who is so soft that they would quit a game they enjoy because they got attacked by a singular person?)

Part 1847847 of PVP lovers insulting people who don’t want low levels to be ganked by a max level because they know forced PVP can work, but it must be done carefully to prevent extremely unfair situations. Unfortunately, AO can’t allow for this to happen.

someone’s trying to hunt you to steal your cargo, its your ship and your advantage, they have to destroy your ship or kill you, all you have to do is run away, there’s easy ways to deal with that

speed heavy. Start going one direction and redirect, giving you an open flank to attack as they are forced to follow. This is, however, for those who are at this point. The level 60s and 70s who are getting outmatched against a max level happens. You’ve ignored that.

Okay, you are purposefully saying antagonizing shit, because you are not only wrong, but outnumbered in this argument. Someone who can’t even run because of the level difference WILL encounter problems. Players who struggle due to their internet (or other issues) have an easier time with PvE because NPCs don’t have builds made to maximize off of that problem. Stop being rude.

A PvEr should be able to exist in peace, a PvPer should be able to exist in conflict. A PvEr should not be forced into conflict as it currently stands.

THANK YOU. This is why Albion Online (though popular) loses much of it’s players after the forced PVP sections. Because there’s no preparing, because high levels, or anyone, can force the player that wants to grind into a PVP situation. (There’s also other issues but… we won’t talk about that.)

Sounds like your game. Everyone in that game fully accepts the risk of death. You also aren’t forcing a (more often than not) child to deal with you wanting a genuine power trip. Actions like this is why there is a PVP toggle.

Power. Trip. It’s just… bad. It’s rude, it’s insulting to the player, it’s basically admitting you want to feel powerful over, more often than not, a kid. It’s just rude. Have some sense of damn decency in a game that people, like you, want to enjoy. By making your experience more fun, you’ve harmed theirs. Thus, you’ve created a vicious cycle, proving why there is a PVP toggle.

First time playing AO, I hit level 50 on my own. Sock had left to go do something, so I was on my own. I hit level 50, was at frostmill. I wasn’t on the forums yet, Sock didn’t even tell me about the forums yet. When I went to the Stepstones, I got ganked.

And then again. and again. I leave the server. This asshole follows me to another one. See the problem?
A Freshie may not know about the forums, may not know thats against the rules, and will stop playing because that can happen.

I do the complete opposite. I relish in the fact that my victims are not having fun and it amplifies my own enjoyment. This is known as the SadoMultiplier and Schadenfreude Utilitarianism, a philosophical branch of utilitarianism. It is simply put, a core part of the human experience.

It’s maths mate. Game devs aim to maximise player enjoyment, correct? When a player takes enjoyment from someone else, they double that enjoyment for themselves.
Say player A randomly kills player B. Player A has 1 enjoyment from being bored with no pvp. Player B has 5 enjoyment as they’re excited to play through the game. When player A kills player B while they’re doing the story, Player B’s immersion breaks and they’re annoyed by losing galleons and having to go back to where they died. They lose 4 enjoyment. But player A gains 5 enjoyment: 4 from the transfer of enjoyment, 1 from their own pleasure of killing.

Let’s take it a step further. Let’s say Player AG waits and pretends to guard player CZ (a step even further, they’re a Hero so they have to pay for the cargo) while they fill their ketch to the brim with cargo. Once player CZ is finished, player AG lets them sail out a while to maximise CZ’s enjoyment (CZ slowly gains enjoyment the farther they sail)
Then, AG strikes, as CZ is just going out of render distance. He sails over with his brig and annihilates her ketch then kills her while spamming “ez”. The enjoyment that CZ had (5) plummets to -2, but AG gains 15 enjoyment, a gigantic increase in the total amount of enjoyment in the world.
From a utilitarian standpoint, griefing is amazing game design.
