The usefulness of the 20 character requirement

yes, i know this kind of topic has already been created in the past but i think it’s time to revisit it considering:

  1. people are just typing “20 characters” if they don’t meet the requirement (this topic for example)
  2. or people are just typing random html code if they don’t meet the requirement

i know it was to encourage a longer, more thoughtful conversation, but at this point it just isn’t doing anything since people will type what they want regardless of character requirement. people are still going to type out short messages but instead you’re just seeing “20 characters” at the end or something like that.

even with ways to circumvent these roadblocks, there are still meaningful conversations (most of the time) and complete full out messages being done, which means that the 20 character requirement doesn’t need to exist

It’s definitely possible to bypass, but the purpose of the 20 character requirement isn’t to prevent clutter posts (since no system could ever do that).
The requirement is there to catch people making a clutter post, and make them think twice about it.

  • Maybe the poster will think “bah, can’t be asked” and not bother.
  • Maybe the poster will think “oh ok I’ll add a bit more content” and turn their clutter post into a post that adds something.
  • Or maybe it’s just some big brained intellectual who can’t fathom not posting “i disagree” and they’ll add some keyboard mashing to the end. Can’t be helped, some people are just stupid.

Point is, the 20 character requirement may be stopping more posts than you think. It’s impossible to know for sure (and easy to bypass if you actually need to), so I’d say we keep it.

ah yes, i agree

this also helps against very low effort posts,

like someone just replying “lol” and thats it

true dat

20 characters

I assume people who don’t know how to bypass it without typing 20 characters may actually try to write at least a slightly longer reply to not make their post sound a bit dumber. Even if they know how, they might rethink before posting it.

On the other side, some people may want to look special by bypassing the requirement with those html lines, which could technically lead to more and more small replies as that trick gets more popular, but I guess it’s the case for any kind of restriction like trying to look “cool” on roblox by bypassing the filter. It’s not a reason to remove it in my opinion.

If we get rid of 20 characters then no one would know what we said at the beginning

“lol”
