Note:This post was meant to be posted yesterday, but my tired, demotivated ass that day couldn’t bear to post even more posts, atleast i am still doing my task of daily posts .
Devilheart is,unfortunately, a cancelled, 1-playe bullet hell game (Kinda like touhou), where the main Character, Vincent (he’s so silly i like him!!!), exterminates the layers of the Underworld to get his wife Vivian back.
Since the game is cancelled, it only has 2 chapters, they are pretty good, however.
And since i am quite Devoted to this game, trying to search for information far and wide (and failing) if Beetbowl, the creator of the game, is cooking something up the game outside of Roblox, i’ll aswer what i found out at the end of this post.
Let’s talk about the main mechanics shall we?
Hearts:The soul of a sinner, which allows you to shoot a variety of bullets, the heart you start with is called the Devilheart, just like the title of the game! let’s talk about Heart variants:
-Devilheart:A Morphed soul that allows you to shoot regular bullets at a regular pace.
Spoiler warning for the next ones:
The Doomheart:Allows you to Charge Bullets, when fully charged, they are very big and deal a truckload of damage, it’s hard to aim them however.
Infernoheart (?):This one goes unused, but from what i heard, it makes you shoot a short-range shotgun blast of bullets, meant to pose a challenge to already-experienced players with using this Heart. Was supposed to be unlocked at Chapter 3 (?)
There are also Swords in the game, i’ll mention only one variant, however:
-Vincent’s Blade:A morphed Blade that allows you to finish off enemies, when upgraded, allows you to rage, making you stronger temporaily on kill.
Let’s talk about the main game mechanics, since it’s quite important:
1.Enemy Weak States:A Enemy state, where a enemy stops firing after it’s health reaches 0, but it’s not fully killed yet, to finish off a weak enemy, you have to use your blade.A enemy in a weak state glows red to indicate that they are weakened.
2.Elites:A stronger variant of enemy, which usually has 3 lives, meaning you have to finish it off three times to fully kill it.Usually…elites are twice as strong as their normal counterparts.A Elite can be distiguished by their live counter on the top of their sprite, or by their inverted color scheme of their regular counterpart.
3.MiniBoss enemies:Usually appear in Challenge stages, or at the end of a stage, these enemies are stronger than elites, and have a visible healthbar at the bottom right of the screen, usually have 3 lives.Usually…these enemies blast alot of bullets, which can make low-end computers lose half of their FPS suddenly.
4.Dashing:Dashing can be unlocked by obtaining the Pegasus Feather, probably one of the most powerful defensive items in the game, due to the capability of increasing your I-frames as a upgrade node. (spoiler warning)
5.There is only one potions variant, 5 in the director’s cut game variant, which used features that were in development, basically BeetBowl’s test place, director’s cut is currently privated and i wasn’t able to experience how all of the new features work, let’s talk about potions:
1.Shield Nectar:Heals lost health, upon consumption, gives you a shield that gives temporary invincibility.
Director’s Cut Exclusive:
2.Rage Brew:Drinking this gives a longer lasting version of Vincent’s Rapier rage, which can be further strenghtened via upgrades.
3.Null Bomb:Consuming this creates a aura for a split second that deletes projectiles that go into contact with it.
4.Laser Tonic:Consuming this potion shoots a giant beam at your enemy at where your character is looking at, when maxed out, it instantly weakens regular enemies, which makes this potion pretty weak at base.
5.Slowing Serum:Slows down all projectiles in a extremely large radius, effect duration and the slowdown of bullets can be further upgraded.
Director’s Cut Exclusive Sword:
Pure Rapier:A Unstable Sealing Rapier that allows you to instantly teleport to enemies in weak state on sword swing.
Since there are two chapters in the game (third chapter’s layer goes unused), which are as follows (Spoiler Warning):
1.The Layers of Blasphemy (family friendly version of Heresy), you can this out in the god tablets, as i’d like to call them, tell you the lore of a layer and it’s punishment, this layer’s punishment being frozen eternally, dosen’t that remind you of that Dante’s Inferno?
2.The Layers of Violence (not censored, oddly enough), violent sinners reside here, their punishment being thrown into layers of magma, being completely erased from existence.
3.Third Unused layer, from what information that i could find in BeetBowl’s twitter (sorry for my crimes, but i was Devoted to this game, it’s a very great game, i suppose.), which from what i can tell…was supposed to the lust layer, the punishment in this layer is unknown, due to it being unfinished, only enemy we know of is a cat mask that shoots gradually size-increasing slashes, and another enemy that i forgot about.
Before i’ll end this off, let me talk about the extremely difficult challenge tablets (which i admit, either i had a skill issue or was doing something wrong, but some were harder than the game’s main bosses for me.):
-Challenge Tablets:basically gauntlets with Gruesome difficulty, with a special rule applied, some examples include:Beat the stage without taking damage, without Dashing, beat the stage without finishing off enemies the rapier way, beat the stage in a 30 second time limit, etc.But these stages usually have great rewards, and require you to complete them to 100% the game.
I suppose that’s most of the things covered about the game, didn’t mention the story for spoiler reasons , if you want to play the game, here is the link:
-Director’s Cut video gameplay on the hardest difficulty, Devil mode:
Information about the possible future of the game:
-The game, according to BeetBowl, was meant to be a metroivana (hope i am spelling it right) outside of Roblox, current progress on the game unknown.
-BeetBowl said himself on twitter that the next games he’ll make would be metroivanas from now on, instead of touhou-inspired bullet hell games, which is quite saddening, since i want to play bullet hell games but not sure which ones , might come back to the flash game ones at this rate.
-Since he privated both of his twitter accounts and (likely) privated all of his posts, i am not sure what else happened and how’s the progress going.
Hopefully he’s recovering from his burnout, and he can come back to making Devilheart, outside of roblox.
