We have little to no personal dialogue with the main cast

With Morden for example, we have no straight up conversation with him. just, “You’ve lost your memory? Go to Redwake.” and then in Sailor’s lodge, “Haven’t seen you in awhile, raid a fort with me.” his diary talks about how he wants to protect us and stuff but he never does any of that. the only time is when General Julian confronts us in the castello.

and with Iris it’s, “I’m gonna beat you up!” then at cirrus island it’s, “Why’d you follow me? Go look for Order of Aesir people.”

none of the dialogue builds any relationship between the player and the character. I might just be yapping.

you are NOT yapping :speaking_head:

I feel like the main thing holding the story back is that the main cast can’t stop splitting up for 5 seconds.

Maybe I’ve read too much stories but it’s somewhat like a death flag.

yeah i mean we’re already past the first sea and it feels like we don’t get a chance to interact with morden and iris much cuz we keep splitting up so much and it looks like the story is about to split us up again with the whole sameria keraxe war

I wont be surprised if morden does a 180 and goes full evil

he wouldn’t do it without some other influence

What if the other guy (the other dude they escaped with but died) in dawn island was actually killed by morden. Like the first time I played the game, that was already in my mind.

Well, this is actually interesting critique. We don’t have any side dialogues at all (except Iris at Silverhold, but it is meh). Something besides “Go there and do this”, something that should open characters to us more. Vetex did that by adding diaries, but in my opinion that is not enough.

I hope Vetex will add some lines or complete non-story based dialogues, maybe even side quests with Morden, Iris and Neviro, when we get to more peaceful parts of the story.

Imagine the possibility of ending the story right from the start by killing morden.

It seems like any bonding or development happened when we weren’t even there (in the form of what is said in the journals)

Yeah this is kind of a problem in AO’s writing, none of the main cast really seems to “talk to each other” you know what I mean? (also with the fact that they have split up way too many times)

Like I get that Vetex doesn’t have room for this type of writing since (as I remember he stated but idk lol) you know, he’s planning to write a book and all, but come on.

I dunno, I think there were some alright parts, like the mc’s conversation with Iris at wind-row, and Morden has had some alright bits like when we first get to the forest of masts and at the very end of chapter 7. I know its not perfect, but I don’t its as bad as a lot of people think.

Id say no since he kept coming back to his grave and changing his headstone

AO protagonist:

Iris and Morden still have chance to have screen time but Neviro was the biggest offender in writting.

-Appears randomly to give the minimum information to hunt cloud guys
-Claims he is not important
-We return to him later for more information he says go look somewhere
-He literally gives no hint at all just says go look it up
-Literally disappears from the story
-Appears again with Iris and Morden for no apparent reason to save us in the prision
-We go fight Calvus together
-Calvus says he is actually important for a faction that does not exist anymore
-Calvus KILLS HIM
-He is not dead
-We escape together and Neviro stays with us
-When we are going to continue our journey he is not around anymore
-He left us for Ravenna in a plan that has zero common sense
-Morden points out it makes no sense
-Everyone collectivelly accepts that is the Neviro way

He has to return later in the story but if AO development where to end abruptly Neviro is not winning any favorite character polls

Tl:Dr at the bottom.

I think a major contributor to this, not knowing the characters problem, is the one month time skip. The diaries somewhat alleviate this, but even then it’s not showing us the characters in detail. It’s giving broad strokes and heavily filtered through said character’s perspective.

The biggest victim of this is Iris, who doesn’t even have a diary so we have no clue how her thought process works or what she thinks of the others. Honestly Iris despite her having more screen time than Neviro is the one we know the least about.

From his diary we know Neviro is the last prince of a lost kingdom, the descendant of the Darkness Curee holder, a drifter, has bittersweet memories of Munera Gardens, and is a middle child.

What we know about Iris: she’s a lost magic user, she’s from Ravenna, her dad’s gone missing, and according to Morden and Neviro rather hot-headed. We don’t even know her dad’s name! Please Vetex just give her a diary so I don’t have to keep scrounging for more interesting characterization for my fan-fics.

Also it should be said, that while Iris can be an interesting character if you extrapolate and speculate heavily from the text, in game she’s just another impulsive redhead with anger issues.

Also I realize I’ve lost the original point about the time skip, but it all kind of bleeds from there since it’s the reason for the diaries in the first place.

I feel like if Vetex played more into the open world aspect of AO and allowed us to explore the War Seas with the crew as companions akin to Fallout New Vegas this could help somewhat. Especially if they have comments to give on certain locations, but there are issues with this. One of course is balancing both pvp and pve, particularly with Morden. Two is I’m not sure if character quest are the way to go, since people could just miss them entirely.

Maybe a better solution would be to have stretches of the story where you pair up with one or more of the crew and have those events impact both the character and the player. Rather then just having one character stay behind not doing anything while you look for clues cough cough Cirrus cough cough.

Tl:Dr The prison arc time skip robbed us of characterization and bonding and Iris needs more development. to do this give a questline (story or side) that develops the relationship between the player and their crew, and for the love of everything give Iris a diary. She needs more characterization beyond angry redhead. (Which I know she does calm down in the latter parts of the current story, however, first impressions are important and for the majority of the game she was angry and aloof. So please write more of her so she can grow as a character, and also give her father a name please and thanks.)

Tbh tho Captain Roger Ruby and Clark Silvers still has a bigger impression of importance for me than Neviro.

Ruby Roger is GOAT
