Weapon Skill Visuals: Appreciation & Analysis

Just taking a few moments to appreciate the beautiful revamped effects of the weapon skills. Screenshots of the revamped skills are taken from this video: Archon of Greenwish - Arcane Odyssey - YouTube

Twin Crescents is the first skill of the Dual Bladed weapon type. This is what it looked like when we were first shown it. While the skill charges, the weapon gets a shine at the tip. Then, the sword is swung, and it makes a white shockwave ring while firing a white crescent slash. Upon impact, it makes a spiraling slash effect. The effects in these specific images are quite messy and mixed together, but it should be relatively easy to tell what’s what.

This is what the revamped effects look like. It is mostly the same, but the difference in quality is clear. Especially in that shine on the sword while it charges… It looks really pretty to me, almost like a gleaming star. The shockwave ring looks mostly the same, but the slashes look very different. They’re not as curved as the old design, they’re more like the shape of an actual slash than a crescent moon. I’m not sure how to describe this, but the slash looks thinner as well, the old one looked pretty thick. Now, at first glance, it would seem like the skill color has been revamped from white to blue, but in a different time during this fight, a Twin Crescents attack was white, not blue. I am not sure why sometimes skills are white and sometimes they’re blue, I think part of the effect revamp is that the default color of weapon skills now changes to match nearby lighting, so if there’s blue nearby then the attacks are tinted blue, or if there’s yellow nearby the attacks are tinted yellow, or if there’s no colored lighting the attacks just turn plain white. This is an awesome feature that could make attacks look more scenic and atmospheric in pictures, I think it’s an amazing addition. Overall, the revamped effects look really pretty, I love them a lot.

Now let’s look at the second Dual Bladed skill, Sword Draw: Mirrored River. The user quickly sheaths and unsheaths their swords, teleporting a short distance and leaving behind two huge, mirrored slashes that arc like a river. Looks like a powerful attack that players will be using a lot.

Now here is what Sword Draw: Mirrored River looks like after being revamped. I gotta say, it is quite mesmerizing, especially that first image :flushed:. The slashes are a beautiful transparent blue now, they truly seem like you’re looking right through a clear river of water. I can’t notice any concrete difference in the actual shape of the slashes, but they do look thin (as a sword slash should be) instead of the thick, almost banana-like slashes that were the old effects. There seem to be more afterimages of the slashes too, the way the darker-colored afterimages overlap with the lighter slashes is a quite pretty effect.

The last skill I want to look at is Beast Instinct, the second skill of Claw-type weapons. It starts with the user spreading their arms out wide, and both claws shine. Then, the user dashes and launches between numerous different points, leaving behind trails of three lines, like claw marks. This attack seems extremely wild and unpredictable, much like a real beast. As the user bounces from each point, it makes huge ring effects to show impact. It clashes and blocks all incoming attacks and deals minor damage. In one of the images here, the claw trails are purple instead of white. This is further evidence of my theory from earlier that weapon skills tint their default color to nearby lighting. The Forest of Cernunno has eerie purple lights in a few spots, this could be the cause of the purple Beast Instinct. Honestly, I don’t need a reason for how this happens, I just know that the purple looks beautiful. It’s a gorgeous color with the claw slashes, I wouldn’t mind getting farmed and rked if I get to see these colorful effects each time.

This is what Beast Instinct originally looked like. I’m gonna be honest, I don’t know what the revamp did, it looks really similar. I suppose it’s shinier, and perhaps cleaner? I’ll just leave the image here and see if anyone can pick out the differences better than I can.

TL;DR: Vetex’s weapon revamp has me acting up :flushed:

mfw you base all your weapon skills on how flashy they look

do you guys think theres any major/important difference between mirrored river and flash strike? katana and dual sword seem very similar

Flash strike is lower damage, shorter cooldown, and different hitboxes.
