What exactly are "mages" in the Arcane Universe?

I heard vetex throw around mage a lot
Does he mean pure magic users
or does he mean anyone that can theoretically use magic (Mages, Conjurers, Warlocks, Paladins, and Savants)?

Think theyre used interchangeably but i have seen magic-user refer to not-pure mages b4

wizard is the term for magic users in general

mage is pure magic user yeah

I just assumed wizard, mage, and sorcerer were all blanket terms for people who used magic, regardless if it’s their main focus or not.

I imagine he means actual magic users whenever he says it.

Almost everyone can use magic, but only mages and a few of the other classes use magic magic.

I feel like “Wizard” and “Mage” are actually just different terms used for the same thing (Magic-Users) in different Seas.

I’ve noticed AA (Seven Seas) only uses the word “Wizard” for magic users. In AO, however, they only use the word “Mage” for magic users, so its the term War Seas uses.

It makes sense, two regions at the opposite sides of the world having different terms for the same thing.

Correct me if Im wrong abt this and I missed a case where they use the other term though, I havent checked very thoroughly for this

Back to this question, I think “Mage” refers to anyone that can use magic via magic circles. Those who can’t use magic circles aren’t Mages.

When talking purely abt lore though, I think Mages can still use weapons or fists. They’ll still be called a Mage cause they can still use magic circles. It’s possible MC is still, forever a Mage in this regard, considering something Vetex said about Mages actually being stronger cause magic.

I think its only through Awakening that non-magic users can start doing subconscious magic imbue, which seems to be implied through that discussion with Ren.

“Awakening” is explained more in AA as opening your mind, which allows a Mage to unlock another magic. So I guess Awakening opens a non-magic user’s mind which allows their magic energy to “flow” through them, allowing them to use slight traces of magic subconsciously.

The distinction is growing in AO in particular.
Mages are pure magic users.
Magic Users are anybody who is born with magic, and therefore can wield it. NPCs in AO make the distinction, showing Vetex is trying to make one too.
I generally regard WoM, AA, and the lore document as outdated but relevant info until Vetex states otherwise, and AO is the most recent game with some lore changes and clarifications.

It’s also unknown if denying your magic and going for fighting styles, weapons, and spirit weapons will keep your lifespan capped at 100 years, or if you still scale in lifespan as you grow in the power of those.

Hmm, where is this stated? I feel like “Mage” has been thrown a lot that it makes me think it actually refers to “those who are born with the ability to use magic circles”.

Idk, just an impression I get from when even back in Cirrus Island, Arish’s mother says “he was born a Mage”, and the way it was described seems to be talking about how they were born with the ability to use magic circles and stuff.

I actually wonder if “forgetting magic/fs/weap” when choosing your build is really lore stuff, or if it’s just for gameplay. I get a feeling that the current “class” system we have rn was actually from the amount of ppl desperately wanting to have a non-magic build back in WoM…

Welp, Vetex confirmed recently that lore doc is actually up to date, and this was rather recent. So if he says its accurate, then it is. Its possible only the lemgth of AA’s story is inaccurate cause Vetex once said that realistically, PK wouldve actually took decades to prepare for Durza and is only listed for one year on the doc because it was just a game and it wasnt finished, so there’s that? Yeah, it’s actually up to date.

The fact that WoM isnt there though means that WoM lore is sort of outdated now until things change.

Probably gameplay
Except if you have (I dunno) dementia I think you’re probably not gonna forget how to punch someone

Yeah, I feel the same way too. Doesnt really make sense logically. Which means that MC may actually be a lot more versatile in lore, and it does explain how they were able to defeat those that seem way more experienced.

The only one you could potentially forget in-canon would be your magic, as for how I do not know.

Tbh, I dont think Magic is something you can “forget”, since its kinda an ability you’re born with from the looks of it. I dont think you can just easily forget anything just from Awakening.

I imagine that the soul grows stronger through the use of fighting styles similar to cultivation in wuxia stories. Like achieving these supernatural feats and continuing to push past limits of the body seems like it’d increase your lifespan in some cases, but also end up destructive depending on how things go
