The idea is simple.
If I were to ever make an MMO RPG, I wouldn’t have levels determine your capabilities.
Everything is either unlocked by quest or exploration, or is based on skill.
Boss difficulty is tied to a skill curve rather than levelling up.
You can’t overlevel to beat a hard boss, but you can eat a pumpkin pie for a stat boost.
A new player can easily stack up to a max level player if they’re good enough, which is great, because it shows that skill is what really matters.
People who are bad at the game will be unable to contest, but it eventually comes around that way anyway because of level caps, and they can keep eating pumpkin pie.
But why?
Well the main reason is so that when you backtrack in the world you don’t get to just run directly through everything. By level 400 Evander will be a lightweight, and the Bronze Sea will be nothing but newgens and people who missed a quest or are hiding.
This doesn’t mean that we need the Evander types to be just as good as the level 600 stuff, after all his gear doesn’t stack up to match. Simply make him take a little bit less skill if he has to.
Arcane Odyssey benefits from this especially. For one, the game is already very skill-dependent, so amping that up will barely affect anything. Also, this mitigates the problems that the initial level requirements for story parts were trying to solve.
It’s all about putting on the armor that’s good, and getting good. Of course we can’t just throw out armor simply because there’s no level scaling. And let’s not forget that you still need stat points to unlock spells and whatnot.
well then you’d have to rebalance all other armour to give it either less defence or more power, otherwise fights would last so long that it would be boring.
thats boring though. getting to evaporate every enemy you come across after hundreds of encounters with extremely powerful individuals is what makes it fun!
“getting good” is not the point of the game its to have fun
what do you mean by this?
someone who focuses more on skill will be killing the one with 300 more defense.
also I dont think this has anything to do with levels affecting power output. either one of them can get the same armor through similar methods me thinks.
o and oracle weapons would be the only thing oracles could get if this were the case. hybrids and full classes get hybrid weapons, spells, technques, yabbajabba. oracles only get their own weapons.
no extra stat increase from levelling would just make le game boringarino. voidwoken did something similar but not to dis degree
stock if you want to reduce everyones damage, health, stamina, and energy capacity to what it is at level 1 and have it stay there forever just say so instead of this
god damn
power output = your base stats
your base stats = health, damage, stamina, energy capacity
levels not affecting power output = your base stats never increase = your base damage is tiny, your max hp is tiny, your max stamina is tiny, your max energy is tiny
i know every forumers favorite activity is to jump stocksounds for low-mediocre ideas, but this one is just mediocre at worse and there’s no reason to unjustify this by over exaggerating when its normally unjustifiable for simpler and other agreeable reasons.
