What is the most evil magic type?

So here’s a random question for you all, in a hypothetical situation if you had access to one of the confirmed magic types in the game which one would be the most evil to harm others with? What manner of atrocities could you perform with such a magic type?

fire acid magma plasma tbh most heat magics in general
burning to death is extremely painful

Setting a guy on fire is pretty evil

Oh wow, I didn’t even need to be present for heat magics to be mentioned. As obvious as it is, picking one of those means you’re doing it to torture people, since those magics are useless when used in 80% of the map. If you chose something as outrageously pointless as a magic that can’t function in water in a game that takes place in the War Seas, you had a reason for that: making opponents suffer.

And, let me point out the most evil of heat magics: Ash Magic:

It can be used to stun people with Petrified, and, as we all know, stuns are never fun to fight

It doesn’t even have a proper dot like other heat magics, it chose to inflict its post-attack damage via laggy, ugly-looking clouds, that clog my screen and hinder everything I do while dropping my frames.

Poison Magic, either Venom or Toxin variant

there are sooooooo many different kinds, just a drop could torture someone for years, or poisoning a water supply could cause detrimental effects in a whole population

Clouds of this magic are worse than Ash, yes, but we can’t declare a non-heat magic the most evil one, can we? We must bury heat magics’ reputation six feet under, for that is a right thing to do, for that they deserved it

It’s a tie between Poison, Acid and Ash for me. They’re literally war crimes in magic form. Realistically speaking none of them are very effective in warfare so the only reason you’d use them is you’re either a sadist or you have no other options.

Of course, this is a magic game, so a single blast of poison is enough to leave a crater in the ground. Poison, Acid and Ash are still the weakest destruction-wise though, and they also have rather low base damage, with the former two being compensated by their long DoT effects.

Death by heat isn’t as bad as some people say. You’ll usually die quickly and get your senses overwhelmed or cut-off before you can feel a lot of pain, but the same doesn’t apply to choking on poison or ash entering your lungs or acid literally melting your skin off. Even death by water would be worse than heat since you’d drown while being fully aware of it.

shadow

like they arent even subtle abt it vetex literally says it conjure evil energy

oh we’re talking about torture uhhhhh acid or fire imo, magma maybe but it might be so hot the target just die so the total amount of suffering is less than fire instead

ash and poison are maybe, depending on what type of poison it is tho considering the desc says “your body is breaking down from the inside” i’d wager its onpar or surpass acid, ash is an idk, it definitely hurts yeah problem is the target might, once again, die pretty early from being unable to breathe so the total amount of suffering isnt high that

Everyone discussing which heat magic is the worst form of torture

Me at the back thinking about how ice and water magic can do the Chinese Water Drop torture.

With our power level in AO, I doubt anything can hold us in place for that torture to work

And gravy’s plot-armoured shackles they put on people in jail aren’t an answer

I feel like an unconventional pick could be Life. Mostly because it’s probably one of the worst magics for directly harming people.

(Yes, Life is a confirmed magic type. We don’t know exactly what it does, but it clearly can heal.)

We don’t exactly know how it works right now (beyond having confirmation it exists through Athena’s Wisdom), but it clearly has immense healing properties. That alone can severely fuck up a settlement, though not through direct confrontation.

All you’d need to do is to get people to rely on you. The more isolated of a settlement you choose to do this at, the better. Get wounded while hunting? Just go to the dude who can heal you, maybe pay some drachma. The more generous you are, the more people will rely on you. They might even act with less care for their own safety, after all, you’ll be there to heal them, good as new. Grow their trust for months, maybe even years, all the while they grow more and more careless.

Then just stop healing those who have wronged you. Better if you refuse when they’re mortally wounded. People will try to keep in your good graces, so you can slowly tighten the hold. You start to randomly deny treatment for those who haven’t paid extra (of course, ensure that whatever wound they have is more than just a cut or a scratch. People won’t come to you to heal such things, surely.), then extend it back out. People will be afraid, but will still remain reliant on such an important service.

Up the prices (if you have them) and ensure that you don’t have any competition. If the settlement (or kingdom) has relations with another group who can heal, sabotage them in any way possible. If the people aren’t reliant on you, this won’t work well.

You have two options from here.

  1. Keep making money. Gain more influence, be seen as some benevolent healer who saved everyone. Drive up the prices, but keep up the illusion you care. This option is just becoming the American Healthcare System, honestly.
  2. Leave them on their own. Ditch however many years of work you’ve put into this, sabotaging this settlement, and leave them to their own devices. They’d have grown weak and compliant, so without your healing, great turmoil will likely befall them.

This isn’t even to touch on the torture portion of Life Magic.

While the magic itself is likely quite lackluster for inflicting harm due to an affinity for healing, it gives one thing that most other magics won’t: Sustainability. Even if the person would go through agonizing pain, it would only be temporary. Heat magics and DOT magics have this, but they’d still only take a few minutes if the user was careless, hours at most. Life Magic can keep it going for as long as the user wants it to.

Weeks on end of being slashed up, cut open, beaten, and bruised… all to look good as new the next day.

That’s with the bare minimum abilities of Life Magic, it could do far more than that. The real most evil possible thing is for it to never become player accessible.

unless you are gonna elaborate on that I don’t see how you stomped that idea

poison magic

in ao for something made out of magic to last long you’d need to continously pour magic energy into it otherwise it dissipates
with chinese water torture for it to be fully anguishing it takes a while (like a few days?) and at that point, just use normal water or resort to waterboarding to torture someone with water magic

tbh I think with the regular one you would need to refill it anyway, While you did slap away my idea with using ice magic I think it wouldn’t be too hard to have a water mage imbue a sheet of arcanum with water and having it over the person to permanently have them dropped on.

Assuming we aren’t torturing someone immortal I’d say it should last long enough to do the trick.

Come on, some “energy-draining shackles“? Pretty sure strenght users are able to break some weird metallic object five centimetres thick. I don’t believe these handcuffs are all that powerful. Besides, ever read about Apotheosis? There is an Athena page about it, a sudden release of energy. Pretty sure one of those can break the cuffs just fine

Idk what you are talking about, but if I’m correct the Athena pages talk about how energy itself is channeled in different ways for example being able to do T jumps

If I’m correct then strength users like Argos uses the same energy that mages use but instead of casting elements they use it to make their body stronger so no if you get shackled you will not be able to escape it because it will sap away your super human strength into a plain guy

just here to mention the countless cases of healing magic being used that very much apply to life magic

specifically the aspect of overloading someone’s nerves, being able to effectively multiply your damage output is very interesting

also obligatory mention of the AA webcomic, it uses life magic offensively quite well

imagine dead revival magic against a group of people

you pick them off one by one and then use their corpses the pick the rest off until you watch the last member get torn apart and mutilated by his own comrade-turned zombies
