Why does Neviro have Darkness, narratively speaking?

From the first moment I read Neviro’s journal it struck me as a very odd choice for Darkness to be the curse of the Boreas family. Why not Blizzard, or Frostmetal?

Now, of course, it wouldn’t make much sense in-universe for every kingdom to have curses that perfectly match their theme. It’s pure luck which curses end up where, after all. I’m not gonna beef with Ravenna over it having Apocalypse, Glass, and Wave, despite the colors and logo looking more fiery.

But Darkness? For Winterveil? That’s another level of randomness. Why do you give the power that people associate with evilness to the victims of actual genocide, especially when they already had the cold theme? :sob: :sob: :sob:

And it just seems even weirder after learning Neviro has the curse inheritance. We already have Morden with the Death Curse in our party. Darkness and Death probably look very similar, the only notable difference being Darkness is accented with red or green and Death with teal.

Isn’t this redundant? Won’t Neviro just continue to get overshadowed? I guess there’s a chance maybe that’s the point. Maybe something bad happens due to Neviro’s weakness and Morden has to correct it, ending with Neviro feeling deeply inferior. When he only has the Darkness Curse inheritance, what can he even bring to the team that the full Death Curse user can’t?

Why do you guys think Tech and Vet decided to give Darkness to Neviro?

Considering we know somethin freaky was going on in winterveil from the well corpses at gloam, might be related to that

Now that would be interesting.

Who said darkness is evil?

I don’t think it is personally, I just said it’s commonly associated with evil.

We all use powers of chaos

well there’s also the generalization you’re making that darkness and death are pretty much the same thing, one simply being a stronger version of the other

if you reaaally want it to fit with winterveil something that happens in the winter is days getting shorter and nights getting longer, so darkness can be tied to that if you’re willing. Honestly, I’m surprised you’re considering curses to matter this much, given that Ravenna (rome) has the Apocalypse and Glass curse as confirmed curses, neither of which are specifically related to rome

Wotan and his sons also don’t have that linked curses to their kingdoms afaik, though I can’t remember all of them off the top of my head aside from frostmetal, lunar, lightning(?) and wood

Plus one of the old generals in Ravenna had the wave curse as well, which doesn’t really match Ravenna or Rome afaik

I also don’t think that curses NEED to fit thematically with every kingdom. It’s not like this in itself is that possible anyways, as curses are basically treasures to most kingdoms in the war seas, and them being thematically tied doesn’t really work that well with that.

Also also, curses seem more fitted towards personality anyways, rather than environment.

Checked wiki, it’s all four of those + aether

the wood curse might be for the castle and i hope that it is something like Yggdrasil

Hi

the curtains were fucking blue

yeah not me though im nothing like yall :sunglasses:

Winter is a pretty dark time if im being honest, its cold and theres not much food avaliable, not to mention it gets dark at like, 4 PM?
I dont get why winterveil wouldn’t have darkness.

canonically they found it and it was useful so they took it

Ever since the update came out i started to believe that winterveil may have been more than just simple genocide victims and actually had connections to the cult of chaos

I said they’re probably close to the same thing visually. Death > Darkness in power is also a fair assumption, since Death is an ancient magic and Darkness is only lost, plus the whole… instakilling anyone weaker than you thing.

That’s clever, I like that a lot.

I should have clarified that in general I do not mind kingdoms having curses that don’t match their themes. That’s just logical in-universe. It’s completely random which curses kingdoms find, so I would actually be unable to suspend my disbelief if every kingdom had a perfect selection of thematically appropriate curses.

I’m not gonna beef with the heat-themed roman kingdom having Apocalypse, Glass, and Wave. My issue with Winterveil and Darkness was that it’s a decision that’s going to heavily affect the main plot and characters, since one of our main party members is going to have it as his power. When it comes to very prominent characters, I think writers should be a bit more choosy with what they add.

I’m just afraid of Neviro being bland because Morden has a power similar to his but stronger. Although I do acknowledge that this could be an intentional move for the narrative to further Neviro’s character development, which I would be totally okay with.

this is true
