Immortality sucks in pratice because of the fact that at some point, you’re just gonna be left floating through space for all eternity. But it’s even trash as a concept.
First off, you have to be really specific with which type of immortality you want, because there’s “not dying”, as in being unable to be killed at all(realistically though, you’ll still age though, so you’ll have to be even more specific to stop aging), and “not dying”, as in being to regenerate whenever you die.
And if we assume that you don’t age for both options, they’re still terrible options if you still feel pain. Because you’ll still die, but come back to life so you feel the pain of death with regeneration which would just lead to you being experimented on, and with immunity, you still feel pain but be unable to really ‘die’ to end the pain if you end up in a bad situation, from being burned alive to drowning.
Even if you don’t feel pain, you have to think about your mental health because across all the years you’ll live through, there’s a high chance you’ll end up trapped somewhere with no escape, even death or have to watch everyone you love die.
Secondly, in practice if we’re being honest, there’s no way you can be alive for hundreds of years without being captured by a government agency and experimented on. Although you don’t feel pain, your mental state will wear down over the probably hundreds of years you’re gonna be trapped, not to mention the fact that your brain probably has a set limit on information it can hold at once so you’ll be forced to forget your favorite memories.
And even if you somehow make it out, the world will be such a different place by then that you won’t be able to adapt to all the changes and probably go to live in seclusion even if you’re not wanted. Even if you choose to stay with society, you’ll have to be on the run cause the government will be looking for you of you’re wanted. That’s just assuming that Earth isn’t in ruins. Basically, you’ll never be able to re-enter society and have to leave it, for maybe tens to hundreds of thousands of years, which at that point Earth will be an entirely different place, it would be unrecognizable, and definitely destroyed and abandoned by humans, which what the point you would end up stuck in space until you land on an asteroid or a planet in millions of years, where you’d live in complete isolation again.
Then the cycle would just repeat over and over again until the universe ends, and then you’d just be stuck in space. Floating. Wandering forever and ever all because you wanted to be immortal. Even if another universe forms, that cycle would just repeat itself, but with a different species and you’d also be in complete isolation. And this cycle will repeat over and over until the end of reality, which would only be eternal agony.
