We’ll figure out why we can’t use our first magic to replace until someone asks Vetex about it
no worries
Yeah that’s fine and all but almost everything in AO isn’t connected to the lore.
In games the disconnect is usually minor for a cool little feature or some convenience, like for example: Space Marine 1 and 2 has you heal (in SM2 you regain armor instead) when executing enemies, obviously in lore an Ultramarine or his armor isn’t regenerating from killing an enemy in a fancy way but it’s a very minor difference, this is the same for stat systems in mmos where not having a certain amount of stat points or level for something doesn’t exist in lore.
This is not the same for the Arcane franchise, basically everything is disconnected from the lore nowadays. Minds, mutations, how you gain magic (changes every other week), the entire combat system, literal weapons in the games (Morock’s sword has promethean flame? Nah that’s retconned), the Dark Sea having any benefits to visiting, awakenings, aurem being valuable in AA, etc. There are obviously additions that don’t really matter in terms of a disconnect like pvp, clan building, elysium, stat points, armor stats, mirages, etc. but the disconnect on more unique systems or ideas is just insane.
There’s so much of a disconnect that enjoying the game and enjoying the lore doesn’t go hand-in-hand whatsoever since it feels like there is no connection between the two.
I mean that kinda tends to happen when you have a bunch of new features, bosses and content. And there are a lot of things that are still the same between lore and in-game like curses, story, bosses etc.
Also a lot of things you mentioned were from AA, which when it was made wasn’t conceived as part of a larger universe, so it stands to reason a lot of stuff from there would be changed, it has been years since that game after all and the lore is still growing and developing since the game isn’t finished.
Why retcon so many things, but still have things that don’t match up with the game
It’s impossible to match up the story to the game perfectly without having to compromise one or the other. Like Rdr2, in-game you can perform treasure hunts to gain a shitload of money, but it’s not actually there and Arthur never actually got the gold to donate to the gang and go to tahiti.
you two are really typing up a storm here, huh
That’s so vague and just incorrect, adding stuff to a game shouldn’t completely conflict with lore. It can be separate from the lore like pvp related content that’s fine, but actively conflicting with it (awakenings) can’t just be swiped away like “Oh it’s bound to happen so it doesn’t really matter.”
That should be the bare minimum, if it wasn’t the case that would just exacerbate the issue further.
Vetex has said over the years that the only things actually added to his games and the lore doc are canon, everything outside is just ideas which can change. This makes sense since ideas change all the time before being created, but he has gone against this alot.
If he wants to retcon things then that’s fine but it still creates a rift between the games and the lore. You also can’t pull the ‘AA is old’ card when he does this to AO lore actively although so far in a minor scale.
Once again just an extra feature for convenience and fun, like pvp or a more appropriate example of treasure charts in AO (there are so many in AO you could dig in the sand randomly with your hands and find legendary adventurer James the Scoudrel the IV’s almighty stash).
Saiju got a lore doc going I just left to do something halfway through
ur taking exactly what i don’t like with the arcane universe’s lore disconnect and putting it into words
i wish everything lore wise could just go back to what we had back in AA
that was peak compared to this mess
Vetex’s so-called magnum opus being a complete mess lore-wise yet again

No Sock was right about everything. While I think hybrids getting ancients could be okay, since pure builds would still have the highest level abilities, tiers, and all customization options… I don’t mind hybrids getting locked out of ancients either (mostly because all the magics I’m interested in are lost anyway).
I brought up Berserkers getting a lost fstyle and ancient-tier fstyle to show the MASSIVE disparity between that, and some Warlocks being locked to only one lost fighting style.
Warlocks will have fewer techniques, lower tiers, and not as many customization options like ultimate arts and shapes/embodiments. That on its own provides enough reason to go for a pure build. But lost-on-base imbuement or base-on-lost imbuement will NOT be enough to match the power of an ancient magic or fighting style, even with synergy. A lot of stats are lost on imbuement, such as the speed bonus getting halved, so you aren’t even adding the full power of whatever your lost ability is. The base ability will just drag down the lost’s power.
I believe Warlocks will need lost-on-lost imbuement to match the power of ancients. One lost magic, one lost fighting style, no matter what your stat distribution is.
They might be. We don’t know what fighting styles will be added. And the fact is, whether it’s smart or not some players will do this. There are a lot of people who will want to distribute their stats like this, and we should let them! The whole point of the system is the extreme diversity and customization it offers, so I believe all stat distributions should be viable in the endgame. Two people with the same build should not be locked to a different number of lost abilities based purely on how they spread their stats.
Saiju is currently meditating while typing, peering into the immaterial world to seek new evidence and wisdom for his absolute doctrine of this subject matter
we should let people distribute stats as they want? can we please get a power and defence nerf then?
