We all know cargo sucks right now. It’s by far the most boring part of the game, and yet unfortunately one of the most efficient. Anytime you need galleons, practically the only option is cargo, a solid thirty minute long job of staring an empty sea and occasionally telling your quartermaster to sell, with the largest amount of engagement coming from driving around the level eighty pirate you can’t be bothered to kill. But it really doesn’t need to be that way, Vetex clearly intended for it to be a risky venture, with every box carrying an adrenaline inducing danger. So that’s what I aim to at least attempt to fix
Details/background on your proposal
One fairly easy solution would be to take the dark seas code to spawn structure on your path, and instead put it to spawn pirates. They would increase in level and number the more cargo was aboard your ship, and wouldn’t attack each other. This would already make carrying cargo much more interesting, with constant high stakes fights and making carrying large amounts of cargo an actual consideration, rather then just a question of patience.
Another possible suggestion is to make it easier for player pirates to hunt cargo haulers. At the moment, oceans are far too vast to intercept people, and even if you are camping Ravena, the land is far too vast to spot every possible port that one could exit from. What could help is a way to track down cargo laden ships. There’s a number of ways to implement this, and I doubt the most effective way could be discovered without a large amount of playtesting, but here’s just a few ways that I thought of.
Last spotted system - A board or item that tells you whenever a ship is “spotted” passing nearby an island and how much cargo their carrying(in galleons)
An actual map - This would be hard to justify lore wise, but a map that updates every 10 minutes or so on cargo ships, with color or some other indicator to tell of value, could maybe work.
Reason to add/change
While I understand development of other features might seem far more important, what’s more important then new features is the base gameplay. With brigs joining the catalogue, gathering galleons suddenly become incredibly vital. Practically anyone wanting to enjoy the full selection of the Dark Sea’s content is going to need a brig, and currently the process of purchasing one is very dull. I don’t doubt that new content will require a brig as well, and being faced with a wall of grinding is going to turn a lot of players away from engaging with new updates(like me for example, who is writing this post instead of playing the game). We play games to have fun, and restricting fun behind a blockade of boredom is going to do nothing good for the game or it’s playerbase.
so the thing with the dark sea is that you cant see shit, meanwhile if that happened in the bronze sea then things would have to spawn at the edge of the map like notoriety ships if they arent supposed to be seen popping in front of you
oh and
what the fuck no, thats like by far the most infuriating part of the game
i didnt recover yet from losing 30 dark sealed chests in my very first expedition literally as soon as i reached the dark sea border cuz a guy happened to be there
ok yeah but the suggestion does nothing except make cargo worse and a shit ton more stressful for the same rewards as before
we all know 80% of time spent on cargo is just filling your ship anyway
oh yea I dislike this entire suggestion.
all it would accomplish is making cargo hauling like 10x more of a pain in the ass than it already is and the only people who would enjoy the pirate spawning mechanic are people who would get cargo to farm bronze sealed chests off of said pirates lol.
I thought this would be something to clear out some of the super monotonous running back and forth before every single expedition by letting us quick purchase a bunch of unsellable cargo that’s used exclusively for ship repairs or something.
I think the biggest problem with cargo hauling right now is the tedious part where you’re running back and forth for like 15 minutes putting crates on your ship before sailing.
