I’m trying to put Sandal in a situation where he has to win a chess game to save his life

I suppose to make it more fair, he can use magic before entering the radius(assuming he would anyway).
I stated the fate of the user in the description:
The enemy can choose to either put them to death or spare them.
Yes, if they win the can choose to kill the user and leave the radius or spare the user and leave the radius.
How is it unfair?
The one who wins the game decides the fate of the loser.

Okay, lets say the enemy: Bob
And the user: John
Bob wins the chess game, and decides to kill John and send him to a black hole, then he gets to leave the radius.
However, if John wins the chess game, he gets to send Bob to a black hole and wait for someone else to enter his radius.
This fight is meant to pit Sandal in a battle of wits. Maybe Sandal will tap into some unsung genius?
Sandals character doesn’t seem like the type to bother with brain power, so this battle will force him to ACTUALLY think.
