My thoughts are that the chaotic(?) magic energy creates lingering phantoms of the people killed while it is present, similar to the apparitions found on Akursius.
Interestingly the Dark Sea ghosts are translucent versions of their old selves while the Akursius ones are red.
I wonder what the difference is? Both regions induce Insanity to varying degrees.
Akursius was directly from Chaos itself, their spirits were “cursed” even. Dark Sea may also have Chaos, but its not the direct cause of the people’s death, some didnt even die in the explosion, some were much earlier or after.
I think these ghosts are just lingering spirits of people who died who maybe unconsciously refused death and have unfinished business (so they dont go to Underworld), or spirits that got lost in the chaos of the Dark Sea
I love this idea! It makes a lot of sense. Some even seem to know that they are ghosts, although they are typically the ones who have been dead the longest.
It’s really difficult to put a date on the figures that the ghosts mention.
So I’m imagining this is like a King Arthur situation where his title changed drastically over time that they basically built themselves a new public image.
It’d definitely be viable for a curse user to live through the ages as multiple lives, outliving everyone that once knew them.
That just reminds me… the thought of ghosts lingering after death due to unfinished business, it actually makes me hope that if a character died during a critical point of the story or something, maybe like during the final battle, they end up coming back (as a ghost) to help and later leave after the fight
