Do We Need Classes?

With this whole class debate going on, I started to get curious as to why we even have classes to begin with. In case you haven’t caught on yet, the whole reason why the classes were set to be rename is because concepts like “Conjurer” don’t actually exist in lore, it’s just a magic user who uses weaons. If we were to expand on this whole idea of “classes not existing”, similar to AA how do you think the game would turn out?

There’d be a lot more freedom in build creation, a lot less room for the types of bugs where Savant gets more size than Mage, less need to constantly balance every “class” to be in tune with one another, less consequences for cases like Oracle where they don’t get any new content (they can just invest in magic while they wait), solves the issue of magic/strength exclusive gear, etc.

The immediate downside would be cases where like someone decides to invest in only 30 points just to get Crash but then specs the rest into magic, but who cares if the build doesn’t exist in the first place? In that case you’re simply speccing enough points to get a skill that you want.

I also have no idea how you would begin to handle Awakenings but you could probably have some really cool stuff like choosing an Awakening for yourself.

HELL YEAH MAKE EVERYONE A SAVANT! YEAHHHHH (sentence)

so pretty much you’re not locked into certain stats is what i’m getting here right?

but if berserkers don’t exist, who will i hate arbitrarily?

having builds though gives players more identity with what their file is and how they play, and this system you’re proposing sounds like it’d really only be used by metamancers who just gun for 1 or 2 specific abilities, at least to me. plus we already have savant for this same basic idea if anyone actually wants to go for it

Yeah but the difference is that savant actually has caps on it. The whole point system starts feeling a bit redundant when your points just get rejected anyways if you’ve assigned them in a way that doesn’t map onto a particular build.

And while builds do definitely help assert an identity (which is still important, mind you) they don’t outright create that identity. There are technically infinitely more identities with a free system than with a class system.

i see what you mean actually, though i still like having classes since i feel like your proposal is either just savants, or metamancers going for 1 specific broken ability

Good question, although I believe it would be necessary to have classes due to the existence of the many different kinds of awakenings.
Of course, they could always be locked behind prerequisites, but how would that work for the likes of true savants?
If one can come up with a system that can replace our current one without classes, I’d be all for it, but it would need to clear a large hurdle.

yeah but what if you just remove the stat allocation stuff (worst type of system known to man) and just make the builds be a title that changes depending on what you use most

Without classes who will I be racist to?

keraxe

honestly classles ao would be sick

honestly if they reworked and tweaked it a bit would be cool, some awakenings make it seem unfair for the player who is a mage but wants a little in weapons, but you can only choose vitality, so goes with Warriors who want to do magic a little but have to choose vitality and can’t choose others like strength and magic y’know…

Gun Draw: Rapid Fire and Piercing Shot on every build

The solution: Abolish the named system.

It’s exactly the same as now, but there’s simply no named builds.

I would support this.

I’ll be honest I like how AA worked where there’s no speccing into stuff and it’s just some stats that have their own limits independent to anything else

Ie no stat points you need to allocate

I think it’s worth having the replayability and choices of stat points.

I guess you could holdout for kingdom alignment to come out and be racist towards people who align with kingdoms that you don’t like or aren’t your own.
