Do We Need Classes?

everyone would have at least 20 weapon and/or 30 strength for free cheap skills while using at least one ranged weapon. feels corny

I’d still probably go full magic, ngl.

I like the lil title tho

Someone did make this a suggestion, where at certain stat allocations you get skills as normal

then they added imbuements at certain dual stat combinations (which could let savants get imbues early)

then at certain (insert number) into a stat you get extra fs/magic

Then the issue is awakening, but it could be some other buff or smth

If something has no reason to exist then it shouldn’t exist.

with the amount of options we have right now, removing classes would be a bit too much, even in aa using 2 magics 1 fs and 3 weapons was pretty hard to manage, and that game gave you far less options for moves, and that issue would only get worse with how much we have to work with in ao

i also just dont see how awakenings would fit into the game anymore without classes, itd be insane to have all kinds of imbuement at once, and if itd be a system where youre just picking one then you essentially are prioritizing 1-2 attack methods over the other, which defeats the purpose of removing classes

Imagine having to properly use 3 magics, 3 styles, and 3 weapons while in combat

Actually, I think this could be a good idea.

It works with lore as we can just refer to Magic users as Mages and same for Oracles and Spirit users. It would require a bit of work but being able to choose an awakening for yourself would open so many doors. One of the key things I think AO should strive for is build variety and customisability, and this would be great for it.

Yeah, as long as Vetex and the community can agree on a decent way of doing it without being too difficult to transfer over to, I think a classless AO would be great.

Also, it would make the stat system easier for new players, as a few of my friends definitely treated it like a standard RPG system where you invest for the sake of improving attributes rather than a playstyle.

that’s like
63 different moves, assuming it’s 3 magics with all slots occupied(8 + 8 + 8), 3 styles with all slots occupied(8 + 8 + 8), and 3 weapons, all with 5 moves(5 + 5 + 5)

Nooo I love the variety we have now. Each class has it’s own playstyle, fighting a berserker feels very different to fighting a mage or a warrior. If we get rid of classes it’ll be a matter or time until people figure out the most efficient stat allocation and everyone starts running the same thing.
Classes is literally the only reason why I have separate files, just having a different magic isn’t enough for me.

Not gonna lie that’s just saying that in lore people don’t refer to others with the class names we use now with extra steps since the concept of the classes itself do exist

This is a nice way to never see a berserker again

so this is basically wom except you have to put points into builds

WoM but significantly laggier

no vro wom was laggier by a kilostud

With how the stat point system is set up I would love to have classless AO.

It would allow full freedom of expression. If I want to be a conjurer, but would rather have 3 magics instead of imbuments, why not?

i honestly like this idea, the only issue is awakenings

id say youd have the choice of which awakenings you want, and your options would be determined by the % of a stat you have kinda like how builds are now, excepth theres no percentage requirements

basically repurpose the current build system into simply choosing awakenings, and if you somehow cant access a single awakening with how you allocate your stats itd give you the savant one

i still like the idea of classes existing, makes the game experience feel more unique, especially with there being different playstyles. There’s a low chance you’ll ever find someone with the exact same build as yours, I for one have only met about 3 other Fire Paladins in my entire time of playing AO.
