Do We Need Classes?

Do We Need Glasses?

Even while wearing my glasses, I misread that as classes

Not really. Everyone was asking “ok it’s fine changing the class names but why are they so boring?”

That’s why they were so boring. Warlock is called “Strong Mage” because they are a Mage who is strong. That’s literally how they would be recognized.

Same way that Thor isn’t a Lightning Conjurer, he is a guy with Lightning who uses a weapon.

Or how a guy who trains in physical martial arts and sword-based martial arts isn’t a Warlord. He is a martial artist who trains with both fists and swords.

In other words, yes, classes are a social construct.

The flaw with this naming system was that there are just better options. Like you can realistically expect a spiritual martial artist to be called a Monk even without the concept of classes. Even Warlord is fine.

also the use of “strong” for strength builds, despite being accurate, is probably going to cause even more confusion for new players than the previous system

When a player sees someone designated “mage” and someone designated “strong mage”, they aren’t going to think one is a mix of strength and magic, they are going to think strong mage is objectively better mage

Honestly you could just have them all be choosable. Make weapon aura into an imbue and have it so that selecting “imbue” as your awakenjng assigns you your imbue based on stat ratios, where multi-imbue would only work at a high enough level for 2nd Awakening and a vastly spread-out stat ratio.

Like if you think about it there’s no real harm in Magic/Wep builds selecting 2nd magic instead of an imbue or magic builds selecting a 2nd fstyle for some awful reason.

Yeah but this is only frusturating if we view things through the context of people need to stick to their class!!1!1.

If no classes exist it wouldn’t be “oh it’s so corny how Bob John wants to minmax Warrior skills on his Mage” it’d be “Bob John wants Piercing Shot.”

Going back to the irl comparisons, I could learn how to fire a Glock without learning how to fire any other gun and just pursue martial arts. I don’t have to commit to 1 single discipline.

I like the idea, but issue could be awakenings like people have said already

This, in a small way, reminds me of Vesteria’s points system, minus the “selecting a class” part once you reach a certain level. That could also be taken as ones “awakening” once they reach that point. Let people pick any awakening but as long as it sort of makes sense for their current build (e.g. a zerker cant pick a second magic)

i guess but wouldnt a clear meta form if the only point of stats is to unlock skills and nothing else matters
unless you purposefully limit yourself to a couple stats for roleplay, everyone would be some sort of savant with any awakening they want, only ever investing stats to run the current meta skill that didnt get nerfed yet, and thered be basically no reason to invest highly into a stat beside that

yea, i was thinking the same thing earlier

Deepwoken is a good example of this

Deepwokens more of a “run this skill because otherwise the dude running this skill will beat your ass” than “run this skill because you wanna be op”

Well, one typically leads to the other

Yeah but in ao the consequence of getting your ass beat isn’t having to reprogress your character from scratch

i love this idea honestly i think if AO did decide to make the switch (idk if it would need to be in full release or not) and let the players themselves test it out and see if they like it, it would be great for the game
much more freeing and a lot more choices

It would also lead to a lot more busted combinations that the balance team has to keep track of

I don’t know about classes being removed in the main game, but I do think it’d be cool if Vetex made like a sandbox mode or place that doesn’t affect anything in the main game(like you can’t get galleons, infamy, from this) but you can just do whatever with whatever items and play around with random stat combinations you normally couldn’t. I think that’d be pretty fun and no concern about balancing cause it’s just a fun sandbox thing where you can do whatever and nothing from the main game is affected.

Next we add Altar of Themis (shrine of order) so we can get certain awakenings or skills and then even our stats out to power pump our main stats
