Well, if Durza just died, and John Thorne is the ruler of the Thorne Empire, then he’d have to be the current ruler at around the time Magius is formed, BUT, the actual current ruler is called the “Crown Prince”, so he could have been put in charge temporarily while John Thorne goes on his Seven Seas arc.
The question is kinda just why would he do that cause we’re talking about the canon side of things here and there’s no reason for him to know about the Seven Seas existence or even want to go there.
Have we actually gotten confirmation John Thorne is involved with the Thorne empire, like I get it’s implied by the name but it’s still possible he isnt

No, we’re talking about WoM. 
Who? Pretty much everyone is limited to their sea cluster. Even old people like Wotan and Warren wouldn’t know about other sea clusters cause they would only know the world before the dark sea was even a thing.
We’re talking about a hypothetical scenario where canon leads into the non-canon wom. Because of that everything everything we’re talking about prior to actually getting to WoM, like John Thorne in the War Seas, is gonna be through the canon lens.
Okay well now he definitely isn’t making his way to the seven seas cause he has most definitely not conquered most of the unknown side of the world.

I mean, ehh… it was written before the War Seas was a huge concept, and the Thorne Empire is still pretty big and territorial, having probably the highest population of people from the empire living outside the sea they’re from.
Plus, there’s still time.
There is no Santa Claus, there is no Easter Bunny, and there is no John Thorne!
Can’t wait for Thornesgiving where John Thorne comes down the chimney and says “Trick or Treat!” before filling all your food with thornes.
Y’know I would have figured that someone in the Thorne empire would have the wood curse. I guess that would have to be kinda a big coincidence, but it would fit their whole theme. Like they literally name their primary heir “The Prince of Thorns”
It was way better when magics could’ve been taught to people who use them already via scrolls smh
Greekization and realization of Arcane lore is horrible, it was better when it was far more independent from Greek mythology and real world
