Fleets - is it an issue still, or did it settle after all this time?

I am a casual player, and I didn’t need anybody’s help. I ain’t lazy like some people.

Fair enough. Let’s just merge the current Fishing task with my idea of it giving meat and animal drops - why not it be doing both of these?

Huh? The renown was the main focus? Well, that is weird. Patrol is the only task that can refill your supplies and food (aside from Fishing), the two crucial stats of the fleet. Why wouldn’t that be the main use of that task?

Where do yall read all of Vetex’a announcements? I am missing out on a lot of stuff. This info is important to know.

Uh, yes, I am. And some others are too. Bank or not, that fleet is still a part of your new file that isn’t developed, and is still a long section of a bridge to cross. Besides, one file having a developed fleet and the others having a much poorer fleet further discourages the person from playing those files, since, during that time, the big fleet is inactive. I still stand on fleets being shared across files.

The buff isn’t that important, who cares. Just beat her up on that one or two files you use for pvp and move on. The pve files may do with just a tier 4, no big deal. Also, what the Darkness talent has to do with this?

the only real way to fix fleets is to make them go all the way, give one of the tasks access to rare/lost spell scrolls and their prices will eventually plummet just like tier 2 enchants (armoreds used to be 25k before fleets were added and now theyre being sold 300 at a time for 900 drachma last i checked auction), the only expensive things are the things fleets cant acquire

Then you’re a semi-casual player who sometimes have a lot of free time on their hands where they can have the opportunity to do some monotonous tasks such as grinding for items even when they’re supposed to be using their limited time to have fun. It isn’t them being lazy, it’s the idea that they’re smart enough to not waste their spare time on not having fun with games.

Actual casual players barely have any time to grind at all considering their time is limited. You can look up the time spent of casual players if you want a source, most would show up being a playtime of 1-3 hours in a day which clearly shows how much of a bad idea it is to waste time doing boring tasks such as grinding when you are actually one. Fleets ultimately solved the issue of them having to get out of their way to not have fun in the game to grind, they can just sink a few ship every other day and eventually in about a month or so they can reach around 4K then longer than that possibly max.

Could work but then again unless you have direct contact with Vetex, suggestions are just pointless as hell in this forum considering Vetex barely visits this place. At best those who makes it just do it for fun, if not and just oblivious to that fact then that’s unfortunate for them.

This was added really late into the update, like after a few weeks. I’m guessing Vetex wanted it to be realistic since technically your fleet is going around the ocean and interacting with other NPCs when doing the plunder/patrol task.

Patreon chat, any of his early plans that he doesn’t mind sharing always comes out first in there. His plan for the Dark Sea was first introduced during the first update of Arcane Odyssey (After the great revamp).

Then unfortunately it isn’t the game’s problem as you aren’t forced nor required max out fleets and you’re still perfectly able to engage with other contents of the game without them, just as it was before they existed.

I still keep faith

You are also pretty good with the suggestions you have made

Yay!

I’m not big in the trading scene at all but I do use ingame marketplace. The prices absolutely are not stable and for almost anything that is not obtainable via fleets the price steadily increases. That being said, 8k fleet with fleet raven allows you to keep up enough with the slowly increasing prices, and sometimes prices of stuff randomly go down (most notably right after dragon update atlantean essence prices dropped to ~400k from ~700k)

TL;DR yes and no (very good tldr i know)

mehh, applies to some stuff and doesn’t apply to others. To be fair, I didn’t bother leveling exploration, but I still found myself doing treasure charts from time to time (notably nimbus wilds ones which give imbued gear) so exploration didn’t really invalidate anything for me. As for harvesting, I think the only reagants that I don’t bother to farm for are golden apples and legendary fish scales, neither of which have interesting obtainment methods anyway. Plus, it’s not like your fleet’s gonna be able to get everything for you from the get-go, so I think new players will still be doing a good portion of scrounging themselves, and trading is so good I rarely ever use anything besides it anyway. Speaking of trading though, oh god, tier 2 enchantment scrolls got their value absolutely ruined by fleets, why does trading 5 just let you print this stuff?

TL;DR biggest standout example to me is t2 enchantment scrolls from trading.

As far as I know, yeah, literally never use it since harvesting gives you legendary scales anyway

Last time I checked the renown from this task caps at 250k, the PvE off cap.

Uhhh, yeah pretty much. I would still go there myself for stormsalt since I find that even with 8k active members my fleet sucks at getting me reagants but otherwise yeah

I think it should probably carry across files, at least after you do Kenton’s quest. I mean for one, having one file with a decked out fleet combined with bank means that I can just give my new file a couple million drachma and a good set and trivialize the game, so not having fleets carry over feels more like an arbitrary restriction that discourages me from doing menial activities on anything other than my main since I’m actively losing out on free money. That being said, sometimes I just want the feeling of a fresh storyline completion and in that case I can have the option to not do Kenton’s fleet quest and play through the story normally.

TL;DR Let it carry over but make it toggleable in some form so it’s up to the players whether they want fleet-carried experience or a fresh slot experience.

I agree that fleets are pretty silly (and having an idle mechanic isn’t really a good look for AO either). At this point though I imagine changing fleets would be pretty difficult. There is more or less time investment put into fleets by the most dedicated playerbase that you kinda just can’t ignore.

That being said, I think a few smaller things that can change are

  • Conquest should be between either only dsc or only catalysts/reagants
  • Trading should stop giving t2 scrolls
  • Harvesting probably shouldn’t give fish scales to encourage leveling fishing (not particularly important imo)

The real biggest issue is that getting certain stuff is really tedious (I don’t even remember when’s the last time I saw a naturally spawning golden apple and that’s the best blocking power gem reagant) and fleets help alleviate this annoyances. Also pre FR my main way of making money was cargo because I couldn’t afford a diving setup (to farm sunkens) and cargo sucked like I swear I was always this close to just falling asleep miimimimmimi like it was so fucking boring

I definitely agree with that “for whatever reason” because I have never had a single positive experience with overworld ganks

Even the few times where I was not on the receiving end of it, it wasn’t that much fun. I had this acid conj run my ship over, so I took their contract, and when they tried to run my ship over a second time I ran through their HP and they just ran around sameria for 5 minutes before getting beamed to death. Like I would rather go up against an exploiter in spars than engage with this shit. that’s a side tangent though lmao

also wait did i just necropost oops

stopped reading half of it cause too many words but dw about this, nobody cares as long as you actually contributed to the conversation

sometimes i write forum comments like im writing a video script tbh so uhh my bad :broken_heart:

An 8k fleet is a pretty big ask, to be fair.

Agree.

Forget the auction value, Trading made dark sealeds worthless by making t2 scrolls abundant. Dark sealeds have three main uses: ship parts, gems and armour, and tier 2 enchants. First two - you don’t need that many, third - now everywhere.

Good to hear people still finding reasons to venture out into the Dark Sea.

Yep, most reasonable.

Oh well, at least I tried my best.

Thats the neat part - they don’t spawn naturally, they only drop from chests. The description of the item is lying.

Eh, you had a valid reason to do so, and it is my topic, so I allow it.

I respect that greatly.

Skill issue.

they do actually but the rates are so incredibly low that it hardly ever happens, ive collected maybe 2 naturally spawning golden apples in 800 hours of gameplay

Huh? I played for more than 1400 hours, and never saw one

they have a rare chance to replace normal apples that drop from trees, which are already a very rare occurence (only really ever seen it at palo town, which is where ive gotten both of my golden apples)

I can personally confirm that while rare, it can happen.

I’m of the opinion that a game like AO shouldn’t have monotonous tasks. Fleets were a band-aid fix to people hating to do Dark Sea runs, treasure hunting, and other things.

No good develop intentionally makes systems to de-incentivize players from engaging with major systems in their game. That’s just objectively bad design. It happened here because said major systems were boring and unfair (the Dark Sea), so rather than making them fun and fair, Vetex just decided “alright, you want the stuff from this without actually doing it? Fine.”

I think that those tasks are fine for the first time, i had fun gathering reagents for the first time or on my first dark sea run, but when you need things in the thousands doing these tasks for hours on end is going to get montonous. If you had perfect game design skills you could desing the tasks so that they dont get boring even after a while but fleets are a much easier solution and thats why vetex chose them
