> G’morning. I appreciate you coming to check out my post, and hope to see you in the future!
For the un-initiated in the arcane trilogy’s lore, magic is important. It resulted in every single one of the greek gods dying, because Prometheus gave it to humans in exchange for them burning red gemstones called Aurem.
Wholesome Grandpa Theos and Necromancer Durza blew up the world in a battle and then it got split into islands. Arcane Adventures happens.
Durza accidentally revives the player in Arcane adventures. Theos dies to an undead Prometheus revived by Durza, and then the player kills Durza. Unlike normal people, Durza causes a massive explosion when he dies, which destroyed the 4th, 5th, and 7th seas. The 4th and 5th seas were by far the largest population centers on the planet, featuring the World Trade Hub called Mainland and then the Arcane Government headquarters respectively.
The player from Arcane Adventures then kills Hades, (the guy who was controlling Durza) locates the absorption curse, and then uses it to destroy almost every single curse in the world. Since Durza’s explosion caused natural disasters everywhere, the player used their ridiculous amounts of power to make the continent that WoM takes place in, which is now called Magius.
Considering that magic has caused so many problems, (including two cataclysmic, world-shattering events) why is there not any organization opposing it? Durza set back the Arcane Economy back by several hundred years, by killing thousands of people. This seems to have also set back the entire world technologically, seeing as how Ironport, one of Magius’s main port cities, does not have access to firearms or any gunpowder-related weaponry.
I know that some of these events take place a few hundred years between eachother, but that isn’t exactly an excuse with curse users being around, who are literally immortal in terms of aging.
We have characters like Valencia (and basically any unidentified curse user who was left alive after the explosion) who might’ve seen the damage that Durza caused and decided to dedicate themselves to the eradication of magic.
Lore-wise, it would only make sense if there was a group/organization actively plotting an attempt to eradicate magic and the rest of the sea curses, seeing as how there is as way for the people of Magius to know the history of the world, (Curse users) and how Magic has basically screwed everything up.
Why haven’t we had an organization like the aforementioned pop up in the arcane trilogy? Has the arcane government and now their successor as magic council just been wiping them out when they show up?
With how bland and boring Durza was, I feel that an organization like this in WoM could make very compelling Villains, with their own morals and objectives beyond world domination.
That is a very well thought-out and realistic idea, it would be nice to encounter something like that in the story. Though I don’t think people who neglect to use magic would be very hard fights.
I mean it’s hinted at that some people are genuinely frustrated at some people being adept at magic and how destructive it can be so it is possible that there probably is an organization that is completely against Magic. I mean I’d love to have a basically anti-magic group. Though again compared to Magic users they would be pretty weak unless they somehow use the anti-magic handcuffs’ metal or alloy to nullify it. Though again, Magic does probably help in the life of the NPCs probably such as Water Magic users being able to provide water, fire magic being able to light up torches, help in cooking and so on forth.
Magic users are probably great guardians as well since well…it’s magic. Most of the ancient lore about AA is forgotten as well which is probably why no one knows about how magic caused two devastating scenarios that almost caused a whole extinction of the human race (unless some do such as the NPCs knowing that the AG existed once before,if so forgive me for this assumption.)
Overall,I’d love to see an anti-magic organization but of course there are some things that probably prevent the organizing of something that major.
I think there does not exist such an organization because it would simply bee too difficult or impossible to eradicate magic. It seems that most people simply acquire magic through sudden unknown means. I don’t think any organization could eradicate magic since many people would be rediscovering it purposefully or accidentally. Even if they tried to outlaw it, there would be way too many people trying to challenge this and fight for magic freedom, the only way to enforce this law would be by using magic themselves. Magic eradication would be very difficult since every person with it would try and fight to be the only one left able to use it.
To be honest, in one of the statue in WoM, there’s one that has the WA which is the time where the War Ages occurs, I’m quite interested how did that statue ended up in Magius.
There are certain npc lines which specifically says that us “magic users” are always up to no good. An anti-magic city would be good though.
It could be something similar to Demacia from Runeterra (League of Legends lore), where the use of magic is banned and looked down on, even using a special material which cancels magic called petricite. A city in Magius where the soldiers only use weapons which ultimately counter magic, along with an anti-magic agenda, could be a cool addition to the game.
This would be a great quest line to the game, where there are two sides you can join with no side being the objective right answer. I am sure vetex has a main quest line planned out right now so this could be considered more of a DLC type idea, and it would be especially great after fighting styles are added so non magic users have a real fighting chance.
I know this is kind of a dead topic, but maybe in the arcane universe they realise that the only thing that stops a bad guy with magic is a good guy with magic.
Even if these groups rise to power and eradicate all magic users or convince them not to use their magic, if they ever miss one magic user who wants to keep his power, he can easily become the strongest man alive and terrorise the anti magic majority as long as he lives/wants.
With bandits being able to level up to pretty high levels that implies magic isn’t the only way to strength, and I know in the trello that strength based leveling is going to be added in the future, so magic isn’t the only way to obtain power in this world. With an entire faction based completely off of strength it could be the other side of the coin to the MC who only employs magically people. It could even have bitter people who wanted to join the MC but wasn’t allowed because their power came from muscles and style rather than magic, giving the other faction a level of depththe mc doesnt have
I really like the idea of having an anti magic group as well as a material that can be used for weapons that can nullify magic. If possible I’d like to see players have an option to be born without magic just to join the anti magic group.
They don’t necessarily have to be born without magic but can roleplay as someone without magic since making an rng element where someone doesn’t get magic seems like it would suck.
It was probably constructed during the WA,
and the place where magius is was probably once land, not always the seafloor
we don’t know what started the “WA” but there could of been some massive war or something,
so everyone started using it as a dating system even then
constructing a statue dated in the WA,
potentially hundreds or thousands of years after,
would be silly after all
@Zel the magic council has magic sealing handcuffs
I don’t think it’d work in a weapon though
I really don’t think its necessary, vetex has planned for strength to be just as powerful as magic or at least that’s vibe I get from the trello. Coming up with some way to use the magic cuff material as a weapon is not needed.
This is actually a really good lore question, I believe. It’s a realistic concern. If we lived in the Arcane universe, it would certainly be strange that no one has decided “Magic is the root of all evil!” Actually, I would really really like Vetex to add an npc group in the lore/game that is against magic. I think it would fix your problem, and it would just be cool to see a bunch of “Wizard Hunters” who are all buff cause they don’t use any magic.
Here’s my only answer to the question: It’s probably the case that Magic became such a powerful tool of good that it made up for its evil uses. It’s similar to gun rights in America. Guns are neither intrinsically good nor bad. They’re tools, and magic is also a tool. Someone can use a gun for a noble cause (saving people from getting shot) or someone can use a gun for a malicious cause (shooting a school). The same goes for Magic. Outlawing magic in Magius would be extremely radical just as outlawing guns in the U.S. is extremely radical. It’s obviously an intrinsic part of the culture/history of Magius, and it’s likely that they focus more on learning how to use Magic morally rather than trying to limit/outlaw it.
the thing is though, wizards rule the world
all the truly powerful/authoritative people are either traders or insanely power wizards,
the entirety of the magic council is made of wizards, and theres plenty of freelance wizards
I can definitely see there being a bandit group/guild with those ideals though
