Hair Customization Revamp (+ Third Hair Gamepass)

Explanation

As we all know, arcane odyssey currently lacks variety in hair combos due to it’s limited selection. As a black person myself, there’s essentially 3 black hairs to choose from, Waves, Dreads/Dyed Dreads, and an Afro. If you exist in real life near any black communities, you would know that there’s way more options for hair than that.

I am well aware that it would take TONS of time to actually add all of these hairs, so why not code in a hair id selection system along with the ones we can choose from like deepwoken’s barber? The only valid argument I see against this is that hair will break immersion, but If i’m being honest, there’s already a ton of things in ao that shatter immersion anyway, might as well add this quality-of-life change for the people who don’t care about being silly and just want more hairs to choose from.

How it works

If you go to a tailor after creating your character before starting, you’ll see the Primary and Secondary Hair button in the Change Your Appearance Menu

After selection one of the hair options and scrolling all the way down, you would see a + icon in the empty space. After pressing on it a menu would open that prompts you to enter a HAIR ID from roblox.

In exchange for being able to add any hair, the galleon cost would be 10x the cost of a default hair.

New Gamepass Idea

The new gamepass idea is very simple, you pay however much robux and can now choose up to three hairs instead of the default two.

I think this is a perfect feature to add to full release, as cosplay builds are very common in arcane odyssey, and this addition would help out people who like making cosplay builds a TON.

Honestly I’ll take it in exchange for more customization. Plus he could always just have a list of hair codes that we can’t use

I’ve seen people walk around in KKK cosplay thanks to the ID hair feature, I would much prefer in-house haircuts over some overpriced custom feature. That way resources wouldn’t need to be diverted to moderation of such things.

The third hair seems unnecessary, as someone above me said:

I think two is a great sweet spot that lets you mix hair colors and/or combine two hairs without overcomplicating character creation and customization.

I’d like to add that the proposed way of using this feature is about as intuitive as a sand treasure chart on Shale Reef. There’s too many steps to get to it, when the real answer to this would be a GUI overhaul. And personally I don’t think that’s on the roadmap right now.

I think it’s much more realistic to expect new haircuts over time, and maybe one day we’ll get a more dedicated customization update. But I don’t think the Release Update should be weighed down by these things when we’re still waiting for

I feel like you’re trying to pull some sort of leverage here.
I agree that there’s a lot of hairs that could be added, but I feel that they should be diverse in every sense of the word.

Alternatively

Add more hairs of a specific culture when a new island/update contains hints of said culture. Like when we get around to Keraxe, there’d be more viking options. But I think that’d take too long and only serve to pull apart the community. Some might start to pressure Vetex to rush certain parts of the story to get to “theirs.” So I’d advice against the latter idea.

I ended up typing and researching way more than intended because I wanted to have at least some sort of excuse for the lower end rating. I think I’ll go back to hibernating and lurking now.

P.S. Also also, not allowing custom hairs would keep characters from looking out of place with the general “art style” of the game. That’s just a personal preference in taste. I’d hate to pull up the wanted board and see gleamy hair whatshisface

You have a wide magnitude of looser curls, wavy & straight hair options, which encompasses the majority of non-black hairstyles. It’s less about the cultural aspect and more about the fact that our hair (referring to 3C, 4A, 4b, 4C, etc) can’t be well represented with what’s already in the game.

we could do something like this if there was a blacklist system (e.g. someone thinks a hair is inappropriate [too big, not actually hair {like horse heads and mahoraga wheels}, etc] then they submit a request and if its deemed to be inappropriate its blacklisted. only 1 report could be submitted to avoid spamming and it would be a system where you just click ‘report’ and a moderator reviews it to see if it is actually inappropriate)
