How would you fix AO's power system?

Employ the vetexian strategy and just ripoff nen from HxH

The power system we see rn is what happens when you try to swap pure power/strength system with skill/knowledge-based system. Dragonlords would not beat Peacekeeper a few years ago, the complete rewrite for curse and blessing functions required (if not removal), whole gods part should be explained better as to why they are such fodders and how they managed to create things that contain far more magic/spirit energy than they had themselves (humans at least build machinery that could do that for them, while gods simply wished for this to happen).

To put simply, you cannot change systems (and I swear it was changed) without adapting old stuff to fit new.

Honestly, I think it would be better to tie up Chaos and Creation with gods downfall. It doesn’t have to be direct (though it can be in a way stated below), we know how they act based on Akursius Keep events, the idea of Chaos manifesting through evil minds can also play part in this and it would be reasonable for Chaos to strike down Mount of Olympus during the war between greedy Arthur and separated gods. Yeah, it might sound weird and stupid, but it won’t if you explain dilemma between so said world protectors and humanity fighting for freedom resulting in a dying world.

You could have just copied the picture
Although I do enjoy being reminded of that post, it was funny

well she’s not omniscient in neither AO nor regular greek mythology, most of her wit is for wars and tactics, but in this scenario i think its just vetex not being able to clearly articulate his ideas properly

funnily enough i was going to use this in my explanation of why the “magic only harms magic” theory can’t be possible but then i decided it’d be better to resort to 6th grade science by making the wire analogy

take me back to the days of ash cloud spam yo i wanna suffocate entire islands again

AO power system is a lost cause to be real,
it makes NO sense

it does not have good lore
It has some REALLY cool ideas, but has no reasoning behind most of it, or ahead of it

First order of business is to bring back minds. Dunno what was changed with their removal besides making the lore a bit lamer since most mages are still limited to 3 magics and mutations were unretconned. We’re basically more or less back to the old magic unlocking lore but without minds, so might as well just bring em back.

Next up is to slightly modify how Hecate shards and mutations work, assuming they don’t work like this in AO already. Basically, Hecate shards are still the go to way of creating new magics. But because Hecate presumably still holds some domain over magic, these new magics get added to a shared magic pool. This means that anyone can mutate into a magic once it’s been created with a Hecate shard (assuming their magic can branch into the mutation to begin with), but individuals who are genetically related to the creator still have a higher chance of getting said mutation.

One last change is reworking aura. To me, the whole trace magic energy stuff is honestly just confusing and nonintuitive, not to mention kinda lame for non-mages. So I’d change them to be slightly different magic systems:

  • Aura is now the usage of your own raw magic energy that hasn’t been passed through a mind. This makes it a primarily internal enhancement system that can act on the body (senses, strength, speed, etc.), hence why it’s mainly used by physical fighters. It can still be used to project magic energy (axe slash and other similar moves), but the effects are less potent and dissipate much faster than true magic.
  • Magic itself stays more or less the same but with minds, raw magic energy is passed through a mind that refines it into an actual magic. This stabilizes the magic energy which makes it far more stable outside of the body, hence why it’s much better suited for long range zoning (but can still be used close range with self-explosions and whatnot).
  • Mages do still have the same advantage here as they presumably do in AO in that they can learn both magic systems whereas non-mages can only learn aura. But the difference is that non-mages aren’t using “trace amounts of magic energy” anymore, rather they can use the same amounts of magic energy as mages, just in a different form.

magic

No need, its perfect. (maybe nerf stats and buff magic a bit)

Tell me you only ever read the title of the post without telling me you only ever read the title of the post

To be fair that text wall was exactly same context as title

This is smth I’ve been thinking of when I was looking through the other replies. To be completely honest: its just so obvious and I have a hard time believing why Vetex DIDN’T think of this (saying this as a rookie lore-writer). Trace magic energy should never add up or rival larger amounts it doesn’t make sense even if warriors and berserkers are extremely efficient with how they use it. Splitting magic energy into raw and refined magic energy would just do a lot of wonders and explain why people have magic energy in them but no actual magic.

This would then create the massive problem with the Dark Sea, as the first time Acheron loses literally all his Curses, and in the second he outright dies a month before AO even starts. So for the first time — the Dark Sea should’ve just never even formed, and even if it did, it should’ve vanished before AO even started because of Acheron literally dying the second time.

This would also completely obliterate Keraxe’s naval advantage, as Wotan’s Curse literally becomes a one time thing, instead of him just creating permanent fleets whenever he wants.

Plus this entire thing makes Curses not feel that special compared to basic Magic, it just feels like a roided version of the Magic instead of being gifted literally history altering power, which Prometheus warned Arthur about.

I mean if Keraxe ever got into a situation where Wotan dies I think they’d be screwed by that point anyway

no more of that “knife can kill guy with the destructive force of a continent” which is overall just VERY stupid. how come you have the destructive force of a nuclear bomb but you can definitely be killed by the debris from the attack you casted like ???

what it should be is the higher/stronger your magic energy the better your overall skin and bones are. (if it is spirit energy instead of magic energy your skin bones AND regeneration factor would be increased)

remove devourers since they kind of create a massive problem where assuming they’re obtainable and can be reproduced, the question
“why don’t they just make devourer shotguns” comes up.

Instead make it so curse users are very much able to die to other magic users and curse users if they get hit enough times and their curse remains at the location of their body.

This also upscales my goat General Argos because it means he and his order goons genuinely beat Beringer into the ground with raw skill instead of bushcamping him and stabbing him with a devourer.

Either that or proving that the cloud curse is just that weak that a regular un-gifted dude was able to beat the current wielder

Dark sea is a product of Chaos, not Acheron.

That’s the point. If Wotan was smart in current canon, he could just build wooden bridges to islands to send his army that way, or better yet, just do stuff himself. He could just construct enormous wooden walls around Jotunheim and make it impossible to invade.
Besides, if he’s a skilled curse user, he can still create some fenrirs. The issue this solves is his apparent ability to just give birth to an entire war fleet in seconds.

It sounds way better to me that Jotunheim has certain magically-enhanced trees which are extremely hard and durable and can be used for strong battleships.

One more thing

How’d you get that symbol?

Remove magic
