Improve some of the boss fights, one way or another

Improve some of the boss fights, one way or another
effort 4.375 8 quality 3.75 8 reasonability 3.5 8

Mostly based off my own opinion, i think that most currently existing boss fights in Arcane Odyssey are extremely boring or sometimes bad made - one of the reasons i made this. The other reason is… i’m just bored. I like making suggestions for fun.

Problem:

The entire problem with most bossfights in AO is that sometimes they just do not feel like bossfights - they more feel like fighting an overbuffed NPC (sometimes isn’t even the case) with a bit smarter AI put into it. Sometimes they are illogical, or not too hard, or not too interesting and fun - sometimes i just want to skip the bossfight and encounter other foes instead, like the Dark Sea.

And rarely, the bossfights are simply bad made - they are unfun and NOT sightreadable. This being the Captain Maria boss respectively. So, in this suggestion, i will try changing some aspects of the bosses - perhaps make a foundament for a fun boss.

Of course, this doesn’t mean vetex made bad ass bosses, some of them are just fine! It’s mostly just me criticizing some stuff and just trying to make some fun stuff. Feel free to add your own ideas! : D

Revamps:

Shura

It may be obvious, but to me - Shura, despite being a first boss in the storyline and as a way to show players what awaits them - is… actually boring?

What bothers me here is that Shura is a Ronin, a.k.a a SAMURAI. And samurai people are… kinda fast? These are real warriors, the warriors who shall not be underestimated. And despite this, Shura is a really slow samurai. Yes, getting hit at least once will surely wreck your HP because of the Acid - further enforcing the fact that you’re fighting not a weakling, but a real threat.

What do i think should be improved then? The current moveset of Shura is almost perfectly fine. All it needs is a bit more speed - less wind-up. It is REALLY slow as of now and i’m pretty sure that new players won’t just go sword fighting Shura at close range after seeing the cutscene unless being unserious.

Though, when he uses his acid smoke screens, he should be attacking you immediately after appearing nearby, instead of taking 5 whole business days to slash.

About the new skills - i’m pretty sure Shura also should be able to dash at you with a piercing slash - making him even more threatening. When thinking of this suggestion and remembering some Assasin Creed series of games - i’ve thought that Shura should also have a skill that he uses when reaching below 50% of his HP - when he uses the acid smoke screen and teleports randomly around you - before lunging at you from the smoke and grabbing you - then slashing upwards.

For this though, since mostly Shura takes about 8-12 magic blasts until getting defeated, his HP should also be increased a little if the new moves are gonna get added.

If you tell me to fuck off because it will make the boss harder for new players - You’re right! But suggestions are suggestions.

Iris

At first i was completely fine with Iris bossfight. She simply has anger issues and at her given age wasn’t that good at using Flare Magic (A lost magic!), but now… i just don’t accept the fact she deals THAT low damage to you, with the DoT dealing less than 2 damage. Iris bossfight should teach the players to learn to dodge - since Iris does not do that in fact, and tanking the damage won’t give you much profit. The damage simply should be improved, or perhaps the DoT of Flare Magic a bit buffed - After getting hit, the players should realize that it’s not rewarding to tank the damage and take all the DoT of Flare which will eat away their HP.

King Calvus IV

Although his boss fight seems mostly fine - he’s just TOO slow. Calvus takes 5 years to charge up his attacks which teaches the players the basics of endlag punishing - but the charging time is just… too big.

Calvus could take either an agressive “playstyle”, or a passive one - with the agressive rushing on you, forcing you to dodge his attacks instead of attacking actively. Or, a passive one, where he keeps distance, carefully using his abilities and only rarely straight up attacking you - allowing for more chances to attack him, but still hard to do so - Calvus won’t just take all the hits while charging his moves. On phase 2, however, Calvus could go more agressive - wrecking the entire throne hall during the fight and just giving you the vibes of fighting a really strong enemy who won’t let you breath a single time without dodging.

For the attacks - they are fine.

Captain Maria

And of course, the major reason i even thought of this suggestion - Captain Maria is probably the worst boss fight due to how unfun it is - She literally FORCES you to cheese her, because if you don’t - you will mostly just suffer. The first phase of Captain Maria is mostly fine - the water tentacle attack has so much choices for dodging or blocking - from parrying, to T-jumping before the tentacles hit, since they don’t have that large vertical AoE. But other than that - she mostly sucks. The instant hitscan and unsightreadable attacks - it just makes it even worse. But then there is phase 2 - 5x times worse than 1st phase and just absolutely telling you “cheese me!” while fighting.

Captain Maria, though, as i noticed, is currently the only enemy who can cast a water bubble to defend herself - but just a water bubble? It should simply change to damage reduction.

In my opinion, phase 2 of Captain Maria should be completely reworked. All her attacks except the water tentacles need to get different wind-up animations and just be reworked to make it sightreadable. The giant brig ship or whatever - should be resized for more space. If the boss fight was made to be fought in tight spaces - then just don’t allow to cheese her that easily and simply rework some of the attacks! If phase 2 is made to be fought inside the ship, when the only way to escape water tentacles attack is to cheese or go to the cornet of the room and block - then it’s just not a good boss design. It would’ve been much better if the floor didn’t break - and Maria tried to escape to the bottom of the ship and “ambush there” - and some of the attacks like water tentacles would be changed - instead of hitting on the ship floor, they would shake the ship sometimes, and confusing the player, while the captain herself would prepare another attack.

There’s simply so much things that could make Captain Maria boss fight better - i just don’t feel like mentioning them all.

Is it full-serious? Well, no.

Why didn’t i include other bosses like Lord Elius or General Argos? I just feel like their boss fights are fine.

Feel free to add your own stuff to the suggestion! : D

Dang this is pretty cool can’t wait for someone to complain about it

Captain Maria is objectively one of the most poorly designed and utterly insufferable bossfights in ROBLOX gaming and I will stand firmly by that statement.

The fact that Captain Maria’s cutscenes are FAR LESS DETAILED than other ones, being sloppy or other stuff, makes me feel that she was a rushed boss

I think iirc big V actually stated somewhere he was on a time crunch due to money issues when he was working on the nimbus sea, which could explain why Maria feels noticeably sloppier compared to the bronze sea fights

you forgot kalliste and amelia, those are the real problem :wilted_flower:

they are mini bosses…

also im gonna break the ice: i never encountered them.

(yes, with all my 16 files, i did not in fact try to fight Amelia and Kalliste as of now. Im not that active on nimbus sea stuff other than Tidecliff Isle building)

They’re both so ez though wdym :sob:

(I guess the fact they are so comically cheeseable is a problem too)

As much as some bosses need a rework, I doubt it’ll happen outside of number changes in the code

Maria is the only who actively needs improvements.

Iris is whatever (She doesn’t need new stuff but it would be cool) and Shura doesn’t need allat considering you fight him at like level 10 or something. Bosses in the beginning parts of the story aren’t in dire need of buffs, that should be saved for some kind of hard mode / new game+

Calvus fight is fine as it is so he doesn’t need buffs either. He’s still challenging when you’re not actively doing while also not avoiding side quests.

You have to consider that AO is unique and not a lot of skill can be transferred from other games meaning a lot of players are going to take a bit of time getting the hang of things. So it’s gonna be a pain in the ass for new / returning players having to deal with fast as fuck dudes when they’re still trying to learn the game. This suggestion is basically just overtuning to hell.

making harder =/= improving them.

I take criticizing just fine, but i’m a bit bored and some parts of your post bother me, so ill say this:

  • Pretty sure you underexaggerated the ratings. The suggestion is not hell to read - the information given, the reasoning behind the suggestion - it shouldnt be THAT low, especially in the Quality. But thats probably just me idk
  • Earlier bosses becoming significantly harder will set up the spirit in players - they’ll understand that there will be similar strong foes that won’t be a training dummy to them. There will be no more situations where the new players beat Shura and Iris, and then the next bosses suddenly become overbuffed and simply overwhelm them - that is mostly the reason of quitting. Players were unprepared for the sudden increase in difficulty.
  • To add to the previous point, Shura and Iris are already far too easy to beat - one of them being far too slow and the damage being too insignificant (Shura), and the other one - rushing constantly without any dodging (Iris). If they made Iris far more threatening to the players - the rush would overwhelm them, teach them of blocking and more complex dodging, especially if they add new spells to Iris. Then I wouldn’t complain - but alas, I have to. Shura on the other hand takes 5 whole business days to use his attacks - and there is a reasoning behind my ideas for the “buffs” - It’s a Samurai. And Samurai won’t be toying around.
  • Continuing off Shura, i did not say he needed major buffs - the minor attack speed increase would already do good enough, and the special moves would further make the boss fight more enjoyable.
  • And as an answer to your pre-last words in the post, this suggestion wasn’t made to overbuff bosses. It was made to improve their fights, make them more enjoyable and feel more threatening - meaning they wouldn’t feel as empty NPCs with special attacks and actually feel like serious enemies!

I’d like a better Maria fight, but I feel that the other bosses are fine, and Calvus is great (although I wish it was more intuitive for new players)

captain maria is definitely going to need a rework, she’s by far the most unfun boss to fight, and even her animations are bad, making it feel like the devs rushed to create her.

But other than that, I don’t think there’s any need to make the bosses harder, especally not the ones you fight in early game, like Shura and Iris. Making bosses harder doesn’t really improve them

Shura
unecessary but agreed
i dont think the changes to shura are bad at all (although making the fight harder for new players is controversial), but i highly doubt he’d be changed.
hes literally meant to be an extremely simple scripted mendatory guy you fight once at level 10. any more effort in him is kinda pointless because you only see him a single time in your first 20 min or so and cant refight him

Iris
agreed
i dont think raising damage would be bad. in fact youre right to say that it teaches players to not trade hits in pve, you should always be dodging.
although its worth saying iris isnt really a boss either, much like shura. elius is the first boss, everything before are just mendatory story fights. but you can refight her so why not.

Calvus
unsure, tend to disagree
if we reduce calvus’ vulnerability then i think we should really reduce his health then, because its already a drag when you dont have a good item loadout. im not sure if making him charge faster would be good either, because a lot of calvus’ attacks are long scripted combos and waiting out 5 attacks to have a chance to hit him once isnt very run.

Maria
AGREED
maria should be removed from videogame history. any change to her would be good. i beg.

Oh my god wait testers ALSO hate maria???

testers are part of a wider group called “human beings”
theres a 1:1 correlation between human beings and hating maria

i only agree with the captain maria one and im sure crimsonpants does too

Waping, Fartman, Randomness, Ultimate, Crimsonpants and god knows who else on their way to confirm they do hate Maria

Just to spite you >.<

i agree with shura, iris actually does a ton of damage already, but i would understand if it got increased slightly, but her attacks are way to big to try and show new players how to dodge, so i think the attacks should be slightly smaller than, as well as making the placed explosion move have a cue when its about to explode, for king calvus, he does high damage and is considerably fast already, king calvus almost made me quit the game bru, imagine how thatll be on complete freshies
