Is water a cold magic

  1. that’s a property of the second law of thermodynamics, not inherent to water itself
  2. assumption, nothing tells us the exact temperature of water magic

idk how this relates to water not being a cold magic and 2. assumption

are you saying water magic is boiling hot or at least greater than 37 degrees then? if it’s any temperature it’s probably the same as the ocean around us

no, i’m saying the temperature doesn’t matter because “water” isn’t related to any temperature hot or cold

when it evaporates off you it takes some of your heat away, leaving you colder than before

its in a weird spot ig

water itself isnt cold but it does make us feel cold, basically

if theres a 1-5 scale with 5 being 100% a cold magic, id give it 3-3.5

as i said… this is only occurs when the water is already colder than your body temperature, which is true for ALL SUBSTANCES

all substances will make you colder if it is below your body temperature

i already mentioned that this is not an inherent property of water, since boiling water would make you hotter despite “evaporating off you”

it only makes you feel cold if it’s colder than you, which is true for literally everything

are you saying water magic is 37 degrees or greater

and that’s just because the water that’s still on you is warm enough so it overpowers whatever the evaporation does

considering water magic doesnt raise nor lower our temperature bar, im assuming that water magic have the average human body temperature, whatever that is

by extension would earth and metal magic be considered cold magics since they would likely be summoned at room temperature?

do you understand why water evaporates on you in the first place

now this is a definitive answer

mmm water

they would definitely feel cool, but i don’t care enough about earth and metal to know things about them, so i don’t know if they would have the same cooling capabilities as water or not. i mean, you hear about water cooling and stuff all the time but not metal cooling or something unless i just don’t know about something

because there’s a small layer of molecules with enough energy at the surface of the water to escape

water is a neutral magic
it by all means just matches the temperature of whatever area your in currently, and would thus feel no different than the air temperature wise

I don’t think water magic is cold itself, iirc water only cools you down because it can easily absorb heat, though that cooling process won’t happen instantly.

Soaked does seem to cool you down, however.

even room temperature water the same heat as air would feel cool on you though because it evaporates

TLDR:
this question is as stupid as “is water wet”

because water has a high heat capacity :sob:

okay ykw lemme break it down for you

  • different substances have different “heat capacities”
  • what heat capacity is is basically how much energy it takes for an object to change temperature
  • water has a very high heat capacity; it can store a lot of energy and only have its temperature increase by a small amount
  • this does not mean it’s cold, it only means it takes a large difference in energy for a small difference in temperature
  • when you are covered in water, that water is typically colder than your body temperature
  • since heat energy moves from hot things to cold things, the heat on your body will transfer into the water
  • because water has a very high heat capacity, it will absorb a lot of heat energy from your body before getting enough energy to evaporate
  • this makes it feel as though water colder than you is especially cold
  • on the other hand, if the water has a higher temperature than you, the inverse happens: the water is storing a lot of energy for its temperature so a lot of energy is transferred to your body
  • this makes hotter water feel especially hot
  • “coldness” is not a property inherent to water as a substance, and you only percieve it this way because much of the water we interact with on a day-to-day basis is colder than your body temperature
  • therefore, it is not a cold magic

i see, that’s very informative

i would still say that water magic is cooler than your body temperature though, or at least is able to be made so by the mage casting it, so it can be a cold or cold adjacent magic
