Magic Fold and the weapon problem

I’m feeling inspired today, so here’s another.

Intro - Context (skippable)

I’ve seen some talk around of warriors and weapon savants having access to 6 weapons and the obvious concern that is visual clutter.

I’ve tackled weapons before, back when I had the strength to make visual examples for y’all. But this is a bit more ambitious.

Welcome back Gods and monsters, and those who dare defy them, to one more suggestion by yours trully…

Magic Fold (working name)

Here I aim to solve a cosmetic problem in a way that feels natural amd contextualized, and can be extended to the lore if need be.

Problem - In Depth (Skippable)

I have some appreciation for weapons in thos game. That said, i also hate with a passion how limiting they feel when it comes to customization. You always need to have 3 weapons on you at all times, there’s no benefit to not having them. But having 3 weapons at you at all times ruin most character concepts.

There have been a couple suggestions in the past regarding weapons as a whole, and regarding weapons as a cosmetic. This suggestion of mine is completely on the cosmetic side.

Solution - Concept (necessary)

TL:DR is: Weapon based classes, on awakening, gain a passive bonus that for now i’m calling “Magic Fold”. Instead of sheathing your weapon, you hide it within the magic fold.

Mechanically it changes nothing, you press the weapon key and it draws the chosen weapon. Visually though, instead of pulling a pair of swords from your back, you pull them from a sort of mist or tear or magic cyrcle. This way, your weapons can stay hidden, keeping your character’s visual intact.

Lore - Flavor (skippable, but interesting)

Every classe, regardless of magic stat, is attuned to magic in some way. It is stated that strength and weapon users still need trace amounts of magic to fight how they do.

That’s where the Fold comes in. Within every being’s innate magic lies this untapped space which i call the Fold. It’s not a dimention in the literal sense, more akin to an inventory. Magic users instinctively use it to hide their treasures (a way to explain the inventory), some use it to hide the true nature of their clothes (a way to explain vanity slots). All work in an unconscious manner that cannot be used on the fly (explaining why you cant swap your gear in combat)

But those past their first awakening start being able to tap into this potential. Weapon users learn how to unsheathe their weapons from the Fold even in the heat of battle. Although not carrying any combat capabilities, this skill is a great convenience for all weapon wielders that can now walk freely without an arsenal’s worth of weapons weighting them down.

Alternative - Side takes (necessary)

  • Instead of it being a reward from awakening, make it a quest reward like “Dodge Reflex”. The Vanishing style trainer already uses trace magic to hid their attacks. They could also teache us how to harness this trace magic we all have to hide our weapons, regardless of us being vanishing style users or not. This way you don’t have to mess with the lore in order to justify this mechanic

  • Make it a toggle. You should have a toggle in your inventory where you can choose whether to display sheathed weapons, no sheathed weapons, or only the last sheathed weapon.

  • If for some reason you guys find it a problem to hide the weapons someone is using, then make it so all weapons reappear once the player is combat tagged by another player.

Pros - Reasons to add

  • Allows for greater character customization

  • Removes visual clutter

  • Makes for more memorable characters

  • Adds a lore device that can be expanded upon

  • Justify a couple of pre-existing features

Cons - Possible issues

  • Facilitates “Black Silence” cosplayers

  • Hide your weapons from other players (but honestly, if you count this as an advantage idk what to tell you)

Hope you guys like this one. I’m probably making a third suggestion later on cause i’m really inspired, but way more chill than the last two

I appreciate your con about the black silence

Most weapons really just don’t mesh well with vanity.

I know, right??
Even more so, most weapons don’t really mesh well with each other

This is really good because the sunken sword’s color scheme sticks out like a sore thumb on my conjurer’s drip. I’d love to see this in-game.

Would be a cool addition to the game.

I like how you tagged each section as skippable or necessary and added a lore reason for this.

These are really funny for some reason.

As long as it’s toggle-able, I’m all for it. One step closer to weapon vanity.

Thanks for the feedback!

this is the first time i’m doing this, but i’m glad you liked it! You see, i tend to write a lot…
This is so the post can be more dynamic, maybe have a better retention rate. And seeing how well this one is doing i’ll probably keep it up from now on!

Ideally i’d love to be able to change weapon models and colors, even if it’s just an overall hue change fulter

Buuuut we cant have everything at once lol

I’m fightin this crusade to improve the weapon experience one suggestion at a time

nuh, enjoy your X on your back

i mean, i’m very biased as a mainly magic and spirit orainted genteleman, though, lore wise this makes not much sense, i see it beeing a good solution, maybe add that magic sense will be able to check what weapons you have, just in case people get too upset about this thing

I mean, i did kinda plan this as a new lore addition since it would be a way to explain how people carry around so much stuff.

But i see that it is a bit of a stretch, that’s why i added the alternative of it being a technique taught by the vanishing style master, since she uses trace magic to hide her attacks and it should be possible for us to use a similar technique to hide our weapons

On the other hand, thank you!! I really like the idea of sensing displaying the hidden weapons as a way to scout your opponent before fight. I have this fear that sensin as a mechanic will be underutilized, which would be a shame simce it is conceptually so cool. And this type of usage is exactly what i would expect of it!

that sounds way more reasonable yeah

it is actually an advantage, you can sort of tell what moves/how someone is going to play based on what weapons they have on them visually before the fight starts and then plan how to fight them

either way, take my upvote

just make the weapons appear as they actually are when in combat, then
