They’re able to, but they don’t. They’re also able to use their power for evil, and they do. Mankind just shouldn’t be entrusted with the power to do what curse users can.
Not to mention, we’ve many more curses that are more suited to destroying than we have to advancing
Curses: I can name like, five magics where material creation would be useful on a societal scale (Metal, earth, glass, probably a couple others)
Magic dissipates back into magic energy after a short period of time so you’d have to constantly waste energy reproducing something as opposed to just crafting it naturally
With flight and stuff? Would be more efficient to create a method of transport that doesn’t completely drain you once you reach your destination. People who don’t have magic also can’t fly, and since no technology is being developed to make general transportation easier for them they just have to travel by horse drawn carriage or something
Just use a normal torch or lantern and continue advancing until you invent the lightbulb
That’s true but there’s also potential for a lot of unrecreational demolishing because there are people walking around with the ability to blast a hole through your wall
Sculpting, I guess? As I said earlier magic disappears shortly after. Doesn’t seem like there are many advantages that can’t be performed by an average human
That you most likely wouldn’t need if people weren’t capable of single-handedly razing towns to the ground
True, but majority of the bad events that happen are caused by magic itself so could be avoided if it didn’t exist
True but so can technology
Or instead of excessive manual labor, humans can discover how to harness electricity
Except that’s mostly what it is in the arcane universe. People were burning aurem not to make the world a better place, but to make themselves more powerful. Catastrophic wars were waged because of magic, killing off most of the population multiple times. Arthur himself saw how dangerous magic was, yet forced Prometheus to make curses so humans could become even more powerful.
On that subject, majority of curses undeniably have very little use outside of causing destruction. The grand fire curses, magma, death/darkness/shadow, poison, acid, and many others. In my opinion magic just isn’t meant for the benefit of mankind or society.
TL;DR - humans would be better off creating technological advancements than using magic as a crutch
I think a better title would be “Magic is bad for peace”. It’s clear with AO that you, yes you can become just as, if not more powerful than any magic user as a magicless beserker, juggernaut, warrior, knight, or warlord, in which case, giving up your magic is a mandatory part of those build paths. If ordinary people can rise to the strength of magic users, that means the only people who are actually in danger of magic are those who don’t want to get strong and wish to live peaceful lives, which is not exclusive to magicless people. Essentially, people with and without magic are on an equal playing field with the only real exception being curse users, but I’m pretty sure magicless people can also obtain curses reguardless so it’s not a big deal. With this being said, I’m inclined to think that magic does infact benifit humanity, but at the cost of peace. From living in a harsh and dangerous world of hostile magic users and magic pollution, the world would enter a sort of survival of the fittest type state in which only the strong survive. I know it sounds edgy but it likely would benifit humanity in the long run by strengthening it, even if it meant millions died in the process.
Slow down there buddy we are 100% not ordinary people you still had to have had a magic to become a warrior/beserker etc in the case of the player. I’m not sure about npcs.
There’s also something special about us outside of the fact that we are magic users but we don’t know what
Also yes, you are required to chose a magic initially but that doesn’t mean you need to use it at all. The beginner combat fighting style will likely suffice for the start of the game as you’re progressing strength/weapons. Going down the paths of strength/weapons and putting no points into magic means you’d be limited to just using projectiles with magic, it’d be barbaric if the game required you to use singular projectiles for the game’s story and would cut off the non-magic paths by making progression unnecessarily hard.
Eh, extended lifespan is a nice bonus, but not a big deal when it comes to getting stronger or winning a fight. If you REALLY wanted to you could try and collect a curse and live forever, even as a non-magic user or I don’t know, find a lost/ancient magic scroll if that works too.
