The Problem
Magic Reset has gotten constant criticism ever since it released, mainly due to how hard and painful it is to get compared to what other classes have to do to change their powers.
Personally, I think the biggest issue is it being entirely luck based. Having something significant like this that requires grinding to get, while also being completely based on chance is not a good idea.
For most people, it can take days to get, meanwhile some people will get it almost immediately.
My suggestion is to make Magic Reset still require lots of grinding, but not make it completely based on luck while also making it take a similar amount of time for everyone to get.
Magic Reset Meter
A new progress meter is visible somewhere in the info menu (maybe in the magic tab?).
You gain progress by doing almost any activity in the game, however you gain an extremely tiny amount (e.g sealed chests give around 0.05% when opened).
Doing regular sea activities isn’t the intended way to get a Magic Reset and is meant to give you a small head start once you want to get a Magic Reset.
Alternatively, progress could only be gained through Dark Sea activities.
Dark Sea activities reward significantly more progress compared to regular activities.
(Compared to the 0.05% of regular sealed chests, dark sealed would give 0.2%)
You can also find Hecate Essences in the Dark Sea, that grant a good amount of progress.
(3-15% based on Dark Sea range)
Hecate Essences
Hecate Essences can now spawn on Dark Sea islands in any range, 1.2 essences with a 10% chance. (1.2 means 1 essence + 20% chance to spawn a second essence)
The size of an essence and the amount of progress an essence gives depends on the range.
Essences are also how you unlock the Magic Reset Meter, as it won’t be displayed in the info menu until you collect your first Hecate Essence.
You’ll gain progress even before this, all the way from level 1.
Magic Reset
Once you want to Magic Reset, you’ll be given the choice of re-choosing all of your magics.
You’ll get the choice to reset your 2nd and 3rd magics even if you aren’t a magic class, but you will only get the choice if you ever have gotten a 2nd or 3rd magic through an awakening.
Because of this, interchange potions will no longer reset your 2nd or 3rd magics.
You can spend 40% of the meter to change magic color variants on every magic you currently have.
If none of your magics have a color variant, a message telling you this will pop-up instead.
Bonus and Notes
All of the values present in this suggestion are placeholders meant to give an overall feel of the balance for this new system. The grind required for a magic reset could be similar, shorter or longer compared to now.
Some of the stuff can be skipped, such as getting progress outside the dark sea, I was kind of unsure about that while writing this.
The main point of this suggestion is to change the process of resetting your magic to be a more enjoyable experience involving actual grinding, rather than having to sneak through an end-game areas on the brink of death hoping to get lucky.
One last thing, about that magic reset dev product…
In a game such as Arcane Odyssey, I’m very much against being able to completely skip grinding for something if you pay real world money.
Either replace it with a gamepass/product that gives a boost to the progress gained towards a magic reset or remove it completely.
But I can understand if some people who don’t have a lot of time want the option to pay to progress faster, which is why I recommend the first option.
