Opinions on weapons with higher requirements than their stock versions

Hey, this was bothering me for a long time, I need yall’s thoughts on this. Some weapons have higher skill reqs than the normal weapons of their quality, and I never understood, why that is. Just look here - this is the GW Cultist Staff. An Average-quality weapon, same three skill slots as any other Average-quality weapon, no unique skills, but the skills have higher costs to them by 20. Why? Just for the minor buff in speed in exchange for lower size?

This here is the Axe - an ordinary stock Average-quality weapon. And the staff category also has one of these. So, if I am a weapon hybrid, why would I put in effort to obtain the GW Cultist staff, if it is a direct downgrade from their stock form?

Now, these two examples. The Samerian Scimitar, or any other bladed weapon of other factions for that matter, is barely different from a normal Sword, but its requirements are lower by a whole 40 points. And I think, this is totally fine. You need to put in additional effort to obtain this weapon, than a stock version of its type (yes, the effort required is barely significant, but it is still additional effort at the end of the day). A player is rewarded for exploration with better items - sounds logical to me. So what is the GW staff’s deal?

Then, the Commodore Kai’s Sabre. Requirements are identical to Average-quality weapons, but the weapon is actually of Good quality. And this is also fine! This is a boss drop - and a quite hard boss at that (at the level you’re supposed to fight him). You earned this reward from an unreasonably low 1/10 drop chance (the drop chances need to be studied too, but I am not about those here), so this weapon should be allowed better perfomance than the stock Katana. Giving hybrid builds accessible Good-quality weapons really boosts their combat power, and its fair - you spent time to gain a sizeable benefit.

Now here’s the weapon family I’ve made this whole topic because of. The fossil weapons. The club, the spear, and the greathammer. In case some forgot - you can obtain these weapons only from the Grey Ones in Nimbus Wilds, with a very low drop chance, and, in the case of the greathammer - from their Leader. So why do these weapons have +60 to their skills, while still being Average quality? And, mind you, Skyhall Captain’s Spear exists! This is a weapon sold at Ivoris, that has 10 less requirements than the Fossil Spear, but is of Good quality. You can just buy it with Silver! Why should a player even bother with Fossil weapons? Where is the reward for exploration?

Warrior-exclusive weapons also have this problem sometimes, like this here Atum. But, I don’t think Warriors are struggling with the weapon stat point deficiency here, it is more of a Hybrid problem. Still, this is a weapon with higher obtainment difficulty, but with higher skill reqs, for some reason. Yeah, you could argue its higher base damage is worth it, but come on. Raiding Fort Montu takes time, and Hathor’s drop pool is large.

So, what does the folk think? Should the weapons with higher skill requirements than their stock counterparts exist? Or their reqs should be lowered to match, or even be lesser than those of the normal versions?

Why are fossil weapons so expensive but the beastbone cleaver is so cheap

:fearful:

(cs)

guess thats a mystery, man

fossil weapons come from the nimbus sea, beastbone cleaver comes from bronze sea towers

Yeah, beast bone cleaver is in no way related to the Grey Ones, its a drop from Vatnulf the Jaw Quartermaster

No no I know that it’s just the fact they’re both made of bones yet one requires far less of an investment to wield stat point wise

Just find it a little silly is all

And that one is even of Good quality. One of the best weapons for a hybrid to wield, if not the best

I am gathering opinions here for a suggestion btw, so I need to hear those from you guys

In my opinion, Arcane Odyssey never uses level directly for allowing the player to use abilities, rather its commonly locked by a statistic that is derived from level.

However, this is inconsistent from the levels I’ve seen in this very post, they sometimes set the weapon to be restricted by a higher stat requirement without real reasoning.

It’s inconsistency in a nutshell, there’s nothing nearly nothing else to it.

Thats quite the dubious typo he made.

So, you think this inconsistency deserves to be corrected, or the game is so inconsistent anyway, that leaving this to exist won’t matter?

What if weapon skills (and rites) had a universal stat point requirement that didn’t change depending on what weapon or keybind you use, but the weapons themselves would also require a certain investment into the weapon stat in order to be equipped.

Is this a stupid idea?

Yeah, it kinda is stupid. Weapon skills are designed in a way that you unlock more complex skills later in your journey. Would be weird to be able to summon whole tornadoes with your spear at the same time as figuring out you can just throw it.

However, removing the unnecessary +10 req on third and fourth slots isn’t a bad idea

Relics, however, operate much closer to your idea. There is still distinction between rites - some cost 0, some - 40, and some - 160, though. *Some” means “not many“, we’re kinda short on rites rn. We really need more variety in these, huh?

No, like each skill would have its own requirement that would be the same on all weapons

You wouldn’t unlock crushing judgement and whirlwind at the same time

In exchange, each weapon requires a certain stat investment to be equipped onto the character, rather than tacking that stat investment onto the requirements for skills

(perhaps also allow weapons to be equipped as accessories on non-weapon builds to compensate for people being unable to use them solely for drip)

Probably could’ve worded that a little better but whatever

Eh, still not a good idea. However, consistency can be aimed for

the fossil weapons are really inefficient
just like using real fossils as weapons
yet another win for realism

The first.

You get one of the best armour sets from skinning an ancient, my ego-sized octopus. If something is in the age range to be considered a fossil, it shouldn’t necessarily be unusable. The sunken items spent centuries underwater to reach their potential, after all
