Alright, I originally planned to ponder about Weapons’ route-exclusive gear today, but I got snatched by a colossal whirlpool that spawned right on top of me, so I’m making this one instead.

Certain weather events that are able to incapacitate and control players lack a failsafe in case the process takes too long.

Take the today’s example. I was stuck down there, mashing the escape button to no avail, since the difficulty of escaping the whirlpool scales with its size - and this one was the colossal one. The random guy next to me fell here twice or thrice too, but he lacked 100% Air Capacity jewel set, so he died. Yet another guy, whose name is seen in the chat, got their boat stuck in the same whirlpool, and even quit from that. How we got there in the first place? Met Shifter of Fate. The 30k hp boss ship in the new player’s sea can be addressed, but not today.

So, of the weather events present in the game, three are addressed today - Whirlpools, Tornadoes and Large Waves.

Whirlpools: As much as people hate these, I am not offering nerfs to their damage dealt to ships, size, frequency or anything else today. In fact, just having 100 Stability on your ship, which isn’t that hard to get, nullifies a whirlpool’s damage entirely, and higher tiers of Navigator’s Slipstream ability, as well as Worn Compass artifact, assist in escaping greatly. But sometimes, escaping a whirlpool is pointless, like when it is so massive, you don’t have enough time to sail out before you’re caught again. And what to do, if you don’t have a Navigator deckhand?

After 1 minute of being caught in a whirlpool, the ship or the player in question is immediately released, and their immunity to being caught again extends to 1 minute as well. With this, the player has much better chances of escaping even a massive whirlpool, which previously was a death sentence, even if you have all of your points in Strenght (which boosts escape chances). You can still drown, sure, but I am not gonna remove every threat whirlpools bring, just because I died to it once.

Tornadoes: As much as the topic of these being able to spawncamp players in Sameria is valid to be complained about, today’s not the day for it. Dark Sea tornadoes in particular can be massive, and their range is always bigger than it seems. Getting caught in one may cause you to die from fall damage, but we got many things to prevent that at this point. Problem arises, when the tornado starts lifting you again while you’re falling, right after escaping its pull once. Rarely, most notably in a mushroom biome, you may get stuck under a roof and never get released, slowly dying.

The player is released 10 seconds after being lifted by a tornado, and receives 1 minute immunity to its pull, but not damage or effects. Same here, no nerfing the difficulty, just preventing a death-bringing softlock. You still deal with a tornado the same as before, but now without the worry of perma-snare. Don’t think I gave Dark Sea tornadoes a pass, however - they know what is coming to them later…

Large Waves: Oh hey, our dear member of Team Immersion is back here again! Welcome! Since I already covered these waves being able to grab players in that suggestion, I am just going to repeat it.

Large Waves are unable to snare players or NPCs anymore. Yep, removed outright. Want reasoning? Check Team Immersion’s topic.

How much does it even boost the escape chances?

Despite how much i’ve spammed the button even on my strength focused warlord I’ve never escaped a whirlpool once when fallen overboard :sob:

Don’t know, but it is a fact that it does. Escaping whirlpools the size of those on Harvest as my zerker slot was effortless, only taking less than a minute

Yeah, these would be nice to have

Escaping whirlpools (as player not ship) should NOT take me 10 minutes of spamming m1. I’m a pretty fast clicker and it still takes a very long time to escape for the small small crime of going into the water one place I shouldn’t.

Out of curiosity, I used an autoclicker and jumped into a whirlpool to test if it was possible to escape. Turns out, even with it set to a 10 or even 1 ms per click, it still took me a whole 3 minutes to escape one. 3 minutes. Either, escaping whirlpools is RNG, or it’s just straight up unfair.

It absolutely is, I spent enough time stuck with 100% air capacity in whirlpools around Tidecliff to know it is.
