Practicality of Scythe Weapons in AO

yeah but the problem is we dont need another gun. Idk how one can sit and miss the perfect opportunities to implement weapons like a strength weapon war sword-spear or scythe boss weapon, but no, instead were getting another strength great sword and what you presume to be another gun :man_facepalming:

What if you run out of bullets on your other guns? Also, consider the following: big guns

probably because a scythe is a very impractical weapon

add war scythe where it’s just another polearm

I can’t wait for Vetex to add Brandon Herrera to Arcane Odyssey

exactly this :sob:

it’d be hella awesome if we could instead get some gigantic guns. By gigantic i mean barrels two players long with a barrel as wide as an arm.

one hell of a piercing shot…

Spear that transforms into a Scythe

At that point just keep it as a spear or something since it’d be a lot more effective

I would still like scythes because they look awesome and they satisfy that little edgy guy in me that wanted to get the magic one in AA

maybe for clan bases you can get a scythe tool to harvest a little extra clan galleons from plants

they’re not, they can have a slicing move that works like shining scythe, they would have flying slash, and would also have towering impact. Its not that hard to give a weapon already existing moves :man_shrugging:

They do look very cool though

Idk I feel like jamming the tip of the blade into an enemy’s skull would be pretty effective

you can do that with something like an axe or spear instead. you know, something more practical

I mean, scythe can be used as weapons, sure, but like… they weren’t really made for fighting. They were designed to cut grass and wheat, not people in armor. When you think about it, the scythe is this big, awkward farming tool with a blade that curves inward. That inward curve is perfect for pulling stalks of grain toward you, but in a fight, it works against you. The blade isn’t naturally aligned with your swing, and you’d have to attack in these wide, telegraphed arcs just to land a hit. That makes you slower, easier to predict, and honestly more likely to get skewered by someone with a shorter, faster weapon.
Now, yes, you could sharpen the blade and reinforce the handle, and in desperate times peasants did exactly that. A scythe could hook, trip, or even catch an opponent’s weapon if used cleverly. But even then, the whole thing feels clumsy in comparison to a weapon that was actually built for war. It’s sort of like trying to use a broom as a spear—you could stab someone with it, but there are much better tools for the job.
If we’re talking about proper melee weapons, spears and swords leave scythes far behind. Spears, for example, are criminally underrated. They’re cheap, easy to make, and give you reach that keeps your enemy at a distance. A line of spear-wielders can absolutely shut down cavalry or rushing infantry. In one-on-one duels, a spear is quick to thrust and easy to maneuver, which is something a scythe just can’t replicate.
Then there are swords. Not all swords were the same, of course, but their design was made for balance, cutting, and thrusting. A longsword, for example, gives you versatility—you can swing for cuts, stab for precision, and even half-sword it (grabbing the blade with one hand for leverage) to punch through armor gaps. Compared to that, the scythe feels like a desperate improvisation, not a warrior’s choice.
But if we’re being honest about the “best” melee weapon type, polearms really win out. Things like halberds, glaives, and poleaxes combine the best of multiple designs—reach like a spear, cutting power like an axe, and sometimes even a hook for pulling riders off horses. They’re devastating in formation and still dangerous one-on-one. A halberd, for instance, can chop, thrust, and hook all in one weapon, making it versatile and deadly.
So yeah, scythes are cool to imagine as weapons—grim reaper vibes and all—but in practice, they just don’t stand up to the real tools of war. If you had to bet your life on a battlefield, you’d want a spear or a polearm in your hands, not the thing you use to cut hay.

I relate so much to this image

Listen man if whatever the fuck that thing Calvus calls a trident counts as a trident, scythes are not an issue at all

i feel like any sharp object is practical asa weapon in any fight depending on the strength of the user and weapon users in AO create whirlwinds

what does towering impact even do

also just because you could theoretically do x things with a scythe doesn’t change that a scythe isas a weapon extremely impractical (why is the blade on the inside??? i’m trying to cut the person AWAY from me!)
