Makes sense, but me using crystal (which is bottom tier) makes it hard to do really anything. And I only choose magics that look cool to me.
So I will be switching to water in AO, because I like the look of water. Not because it is meta.
I still keep lightning on a 5th gen file.

Okay, yes. But wood magic is extremely terrible stat-wise and in terms of clashrates. I understand your point here, but some magics are just downright worse than others.
I do agree tho, you don’t need to use shadow or water to be good at the game. Just don’t choose any of the abysmal magics (I.E wood, maybe light?).
also, I use lightning because I like to use zip-zap magic, fuck you I’m not changing it when tgr drops

Yes but for people of average skill levels its better to just choose a magic like shadow, water, wind or lightning and be able to hit shots effectively instead of choosing a heavy magic that requires more skill to use.

when ever there is a pvp seen unfountanetly there will always be some kind of meta. sadly the current meta excludes many magics that a person might want to use but can’ because it “not in the meta.” there isnt much we can do about it as long as the magics have some sort of variation no matter how ballanced all of them are there will still be some that are better than others.
You can use non-meta magics wdym, just needs more skill

you could very much still kick ass with a shit-tier magic. magic choice doesn’t really matter much as long as it fits your skill set.
Some magics are better then others and certain magics are wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy better then other magics
I personally use wind because I’m bad with shadow fire and ok with glass. I perform better with wind
