I gotta agree on this one. Hunger doesn’t really add to anything. It’s so easy to keep the hunger bar over 100, making it even more useless. I might be used to having a hunger bar in this game but why a feature should exist if you can ignore it 99.9% of the time?
About hunger value. If there’s no hunger bar then there’s no sense in food having hunger value. It would just confuse players, specifically new ones. I think it shouldn’t be hard to replace hunger in food related quest with other objectives like:
a certain buff (400+ hunger meal quest could be changed to recovery V meal quest or something like that)
a certain number of meals (for example you would need to cook any five meals for a picnic quest in Cirrus)
Overall not much would change. We would just have one less inconvenience to occasionally care about.
There is no shortage of quests involving hunger already in the game nor a shortage of possible ideas for mechanics that could involve hunger. Lore-wise your character gets hungry too. Also with the new cooking ui it will no longer take much effort at all to get plenty of meals so this just doesn’t make sense.
Either my reading comprehension is worse than I thought, or you’re missing the point of the suggestion. The point is that Hunger is intrusive, and adds nothing to the game in the poster’s opinion. Imagine if walking on ice gave you a random chance to slip and fall for a second; it’s not anything major, but it gets annoying.
Also, the hunger-related quests could be changed to merely requiring a specific amount of meals to be made. Cooking Expertise could instead require using only Exotic or Legendary ingredients, since replacing 400+ Hunger from one meal isn’t really doable.
Hunger helps to prevent afk macros, immerses players more in the experience, gives the players a meaningful sense of accomplishment when making high hunger meals, and is genuinely not very bothersome at all. It takes like 2 minutes to make enough meals for 10 hours of gameplay right now and with the cooking UI that’ll go down to like 5 seconds for 20.
Fair point, but the only thing to truly gain from them is in Fishing. There’s nothing else in the game that benefits from it; if the bar was removed, Vetex could re-add the stumble backwards from each catch to deter that.
This is definitely more controversial, if taking into account the poll I made about the Hunger Bar from a couple days ago. The way I see it, it actually dispels immersion, as odds are you’ll have to open the backpack to grab food, which is accompanied by a lag spike every time. There’s also issues with the hot bar itself, although that’s a different topic for another suggestion.
I might be too apathetic to actually counter this one with a good argument; I don’t get any real joy out of making something that restores a lot of hunger, which is likely because it’s so easy to do. Just toss some fish in the cooking pot, and you’re looking at not having to touch the hunger bar for an hour or so, which leads me into your next points.
This is why I think the Hunger bar should be removed. You say it shouldn’t be removed because it’s easy to deal with, but if it’s so easy to render irrelevant, why even have it in the first place? The bar itself takes up screen space, and it makes you stop the game every once in a while to fill it back up. With the new cooking GUI, I believe Hunger will be cast into the shadows even more so, since you won’t need to put as much of a time investment into creating temporary solutions to it.
Tl;Dr I’m not convinced, but you did bring up a decent point about the dopamine from seeing a high number.
I totally get where you’re coming from though removing it would definitely be pretty controversial, would be a fair amount of work, and would eliminate any potential for future mechanics that involve hunger. A random example would be some kind of magic or fighting style that drains or restores hunger which is pretty weird and dumb but just an example. If it’s only ever a trivial problem at worst it seems just as pointless to remove as it is to leave in the game.
Immersion does not mean recreating real life. Hunger barely counts as immersion and does more to ruin the actual immersion of the rest of the game. Nobody’s playing AO to look at their blocky avatar recreate bodily pains like starvation.
Hunger forces two inputs at least every ~31 minutes. That’s not stopping any macroers.
(Edit: Forgot to mention that you can outheal starvation)
Knockback from fishing was also removed a while ago, probably because that also didn’t do enough to stop macrofishing.
… as if the ludicrously long buffs weren’t enough? Or the shiny green color?
… that’s the whole point of the suggestion. It’s so trivial that it might as well be removed. Also fixing a small inconvenience still improves the game.
me personaly i dont think this is going to get added bc in the suggestion rules it says " * Suggestions to disable certain core features of the game such as trading or global PvP"
I disagree with it being a core feature. Cooking, food, meal buffs, the ingredient categories, those more arguable. But I don’t think the hunger bar itself is actually a core mechanic because of how unimportant and unimpactful it is. It just happens to be loosely tied to the actual important parts of food without contributing anything.
And like I said in the suggestion, everything else food related would work perfectly fine, even the motivators to actually eat meals at all.
It does seem like a core feature though, but only because it happens to be labelled “hunger” which reminds people of irl biological needs.
Also, not trying to be insulting or anything, but people stopped caring about suggestion rules a long time ago. There was a “phase” after the Dark Sea update where people were making tons of fun ideas even though none of them got added.
removing the hunger bar wont affect the game negatively. Food will still be able to be cooked and eaten, though only for stats. They could act as potions, except on a much smaller scale. For example mushroom based food gives agility, but instead lets say it gives agility for 2 minutes and replenishes your stamina by 5 points each second, and for bear meat based food it gives hp ranging from 15-120 based on level of food but has a limit to how much you can eat between a designated amount of time in lets say pvp combat.
