The Auction House is way more important then you think

A feature seldom discussed coming in AO’s future is the Auction House. I had a talk with Cryo the other day and came to really appreciate the Auction House and what it will do for the overall health of the game.

Right now, AO has a pretty big late game problem. Let’s put this in two perspectives, the pve and pvp perspective.

The PVP experience

To get your build to an area you can comfortably pvp, you have a LOT of work ahead of you. Firstly, you have to get 5 items (And you are kinda SOL if any of that gear is Sunken) from your planned build. Then, you have to get legendary gems, at minimum eight of them if you use an amulet. After that, exotic enchant scrolls which are Dark Sea RNG.

Boss drops are a pain, and you’ll basically give up on Sunken because you want to PVP not sit fishing for god knows how long. Exotic scrolls are a decent time sink, and Dark Sea is not what you aim to do. Results vary wildly, but if you don’t have a friend to jewelcraft your gems for you? You gotta do that yourself, and that means maxing out a whole side proffession which can be a huge timesink.

This puts full build time pretty high up there. A lot of people will quit- or half ass their builds because they don’t have the patience for that.

This is where the Auction House comes in. This one, singular feature will be a godsend for every pvper in Arcane Odyssey. Don’t care enough to grind a boss for hours? Just get some money from something that doesn’t bore you and buy the drop. Don’t have jewelcrafting? Just buy the gems you need. Need a Sunken? Well you’ll probably need to put in a lot of work getting the cash, but at least you don’t have to sit and fish forever…

It simplifies and cuts down on so much time you would otherwise burn, and lets more people easily reach the minimum threshold for PVP, and just enjoy PVPing. This will also help- hopefully, make PVP more accessible for the average player who doesn’t have dozens of hours to sink into finetuning a build.

PVE Side

On the PVE side of things, the auction house is essentially a hoarders dream. You can finally start putting a price tag on all the things you have been saving up and funnel huge amounts of money into your account. Money you can then use to buy things you might not be so keen on farming- like large quantities of a potion ingredient, cosmetics, etc.

This gives the ‘trader’ style of pve player a satisfying gameplay loop- and it stabilizes the economy a bit. If you can’t find someone to trade for something, you can just buy it. People will have a harder time overcharging because the auction house is an easier alternative, it just does so much for the game it’s unreal.

The Auction House saves a huge amount of time for PVPers and instantly creates a more stable economy for PVE players. It facilitates a space that is the ‘endgame content’ for traders & people who enjoy farming and selling goods.

This feature is vital for the games health in the future and I just don’t see many people talking about it at all.

Essentially it would bring some the trading community to use in-house systems as opposed to discord and the forums. Which I suppose could prevent some scams from happening.

I’m mainly looking forward to auctioning off my 300 arctic crystals since there’s no easy way to sell the NPCs that have 1k galleon limits and such

Yeah, there are a lot of ways to approach ‘money making’ on the auction house too. Could brew potions, could just sell the reagents. Could be a humble boss farmer, or a fisher. Treasure hunters can sell modified gear, chefs, their best meals.

Only thing really needed is money burns. Seasonals and sunkens are the only reasons one would need to save up a lot of money right now, and I doubt many people will sell those for some galleons.

give us like 5x as many rare enchants and make them only avaliable from the enchanter npcs, we doing a reforge style m9ney sink

There is just nothing to discuss about it rn. Its was pretty popular discussion before AO came out.

AO turns out to be a grind game and in my opinion auction house should be delayed until 350-500+ lvl content, cuz right now its gonna be just a dump of money. Some people will grind for stuff to sell, while others just grind money to buy that stuff, nothing interesting.

But at higher lvls there will be items which actually require some luck or rng to get them (for example, when there are a lot of lost magics, its will be unreally to get exactly one that you want, so you can trade other one for the one you are looking for).

the auction house has been at 10/20 done for ages it doesnt sound like it is releasing any time soon

I always felt like its going to be waayyyyy important later on, that it would probs become a necessity at later stages of the game when we get even more rare stuff for builds.

Remember, we’re going to get Exotic/Legendary Weapons, Lost/Ancient Magics, Ancient/Lost Spells/Techniques, etc. A LOT of items will later become much more specialized to specific builds, and your chances of getting either one is randomized. Imagine you want a specific magic and you just aren’t getting it, or you keep getting weapons instead?

Sure, you can get that stuff eventually, but thatd take longer. Itd be much more convenient if youre just able to set them up for Auction and someone is able to give the thing you want in return. This also goes for us PvErs cause we also need to prep for future content like story or Dark Sea and stuff.

But yeah, also having it earlier wpuld be nice though. At least I have a place to offer a bunch of rare techniques that my Mage doesnt need lmao

If it’s to be implemented anytime this year (which I hope it is), I expect it to get introduced in the full release

IIrc Headless has said that its all complete on his end, so Vet just needs to implement the in game side of it.

Watch me flip an old boot for 500k :money_mouth_face:

Here’s the problem though.
Who is gonna auction off their high value items for galleons?

The only reason you would do it is to get the money necessary for a new boat, otherwise it’s just superior to trade

That’s the beauty of an auction house. The moment a few people do start auctioning high value items, it’ll create a cycle. Some will sell them and buy huge bulks of cheaper- yet still valuable things.

(I.E. sell your sunken chestplate so you can buy a bunch of legendary scales)

Seasonals will be rare until there are actual endgame gears on the market.

I’d love to see a global auction house like this, but before it properly works, galleons have to become a more valuable currency.

I’m no economy expert so I have no idea in the slightest how to even start with that but what I do know is that to alot of players, galleons are worth less than dirt.
That has to change, auction house or not.

Well fun fact, I am a bit of an expert on economies. Well, more adept than expert. Still, economics was part of my business degree.

Anyway, galleons have no value because there is little of value you can consistently buy with them. By having the auction house- that changes a lot. Suddenly having a shit ton of galleons is actually worth it, because you can invest that money in a way you want to, instead of having it pile up because there is literally nothing of value to buy it with.

It’s a huge reason why the auction house is important, and why Headless’ work is going to be integral to the games burgeoning economy.

that is until some noobs buy a bunch of headless’ and then sell them to npcs

I doubt headless will be listed.

Also doing that would be essentially the same as Nike burning designer shoes that didn’t sell in order to spike the value of the ones that did. If a clueless idiot burns a legit headless, that just makes the remaining ones worth more.
