Hey, I’m still new here so you all don’t know this, but I am working on an RPG Maker game, and I love being creative, but I also need suggestions for different things to add like mechanics, items, plot, just anything that would help my game be more fun and intriguing.
My game is a super heavily story based RPG that centers around a straightforward, “Talk to people, go to an area, beat the boss,” structure, and I am looking to expand that (because that kinda sucks). I’ve got a lot of different cool things, but as not to influence you guys’s suggestions I won’t say what all is in my game yet.
I cannot make every suggestion by the way. I’m still learning.
Is this going to be a “community” project or your own? If the latter, I can’t recommend it enough that you find your own creative vision based on design philosophies as otherwise, it’ll be a flop.
Yeah sorry for not giving that much info. I have RPG Maker on the PS4, and that is a solo project, but I’m working on moving it to the computer so that it’s more accessible. The computer version will be mostly my own ideas, with a lot of help from people who know how to make stuff (music, art, etc.)
The bosses are all linked with the story and are super linear. Like most of them follow the same “Grr I’m a boss!” and “Oh no, I’m under half health so now I’m way stronger!” deal. The story is that you, a young content creator, are dared to play this game that everyone believes is a safe and exciting JRPG with lots of action and adventure, but it unintentionally locks the person playing in the game until the escape or die. The first half of the game you are trying to solve the problems in the world, the second half is you trying to actually escape
Yeah, its got a similar feel. When you first start the game, you team up with this girl and fight a Minotaur that is terrorizing the town. She explains stuff.
maybe make it some super secret thing that requires some ultra obscure technique like Celeste’s wavedash chaining to get from the normal “top” (the place where you’d probably be stopped from progressing further by maybe some missing floor) to the next set of stairs that lets you start a brutal and horrible experience slowly making your way to the top that feels ever so out of reach, constantly having to deal with all sorts of puzzles, parkour, unforeseen hazards like simple projectile emitting things in the wall, and even maybe some unique enemies.
At the top, you get a great view with a bench and arch.
I personally envision it as some super hidden challenge that’s almost if not just straight up harder than the maingame ending, and it’s so brutally long. Like, imagine Celeste’s Moon Berry challenge but as long as summit
(this is made with the assumption there are ways of healing that are renewable without healing points)
just remember, it’s not a room with all of these, but sometimes some excruciating puzzle, then up the next flight of stairs you fight some strange bird things that evolved on their own for thousands of years in isolation in the tower, then running past them you run to the outside of the tower where you have to precariously jump across stones n stuff around the outside (if you don’t kill these bird things they’re flying around and annoying the shit out of you and might push you off) until you get to the next area where it’s whatever the heck you want it to be
I used them in a different temple where all you have to do is walk across a 1 block road, but there are these fireballs that shoot at you and push you off the road if you get hit by them
Have you considered adding a Chekhov’s gun item where it’s some weapon or trinket you get early on but just don’t find a use for until you’re like two thirds of the way through the tower where you need the item to progress, whether it be an actual gun that lets you shoot something down that your other tools just can’t seem to reach or something else
I have something similar, there’s a sword that you get that you can sell for almost nothing, but later on you can fuse that sword with some parts to make a way stronger sword, along with a couple of items like that
but I will probably make an item specific floor, where you have to have that item that you thought was worthless
