Literally everyone agrees that a continuous beam spell would be absolutely shitty in a game with combat as fast paced as this, you are asking your opponent to kill you if you use this and it wouldn’t even be useful against npcs cause they know how to dodge better than you do

a continous beam spell could work if its implemented correctly.

i’m not saying it wouldn’t work functionally, i’m saying it would be completely ass at every aspect of the game and would be completely useless.

Let’s say it works like beams in Final Stand worked: You get hit with it and it pushes you back to the end of the beam. You could hit npcs head on with it or predict player movement and have them run into it, pushing them back. Final Stand was an extremely fast paced game expecially late-game and beams never left the meta. Beams were a high risk high reward tool and it could be the same in AO

that’s just effectively a grab then, and that was my solution in the first place, so you really didn’t help at all.
but if we’re talking about a continous beam without any knockback/stun like that then its completely useless

how is a ranged beam the same as a grab? A grab moves your hitbox and hurtbox whereas a beam would keep your hurtbox in one place while putting out an extended hitbox. That’s like saying explosions and blasts are effectively the same thing just cause they both do damage in one place.

a ranged beam with hitstun/knockback like the way you describe it is effectively a grab because it stuns the person youre attacking in one place so you can damage them with the rest of the attack.

just cause a move has hitstun and/or knockback doesn’t mean it’s a grab that’s not how it works lol. With that logic EVERY move in fighting games is “effectively a grab”. For a move to be considered a grab in AO, your character has to make direct contact with the opponent. The fighting skill Vetex showed off a while ago is a grab, because he made direct contact and the enemy was in hitstun. What im referring to is a beam that pushes enemies back torwards the end of the beam. You’re not making contact with anyone, the beam is. Whiffing a grab recovers quicker because once the grabbing animation ends youre free to move again. Whiffing a continous beam would leave you open to so much bullshit cause you’d have to wait till the beam finishes to move again.

Imagine a beam lasting half as long as this one and you being WIDE OPEN to attacks the entire time

a continuous beam could be an animation for a magic grab spell, so idk why ya’ll are making this such a big fuss.

My brother in christ, please explain how a move that moves your character from point a to point b with an active hitbox can be replaced by an animation that keeps you in point A while throwing out a hitbox? They’re fundamentally different. Nobody’s making a big fuss you just don’t know what you’re talking about.
