Thoughts on Competitive Players?

Hello, hi! I’m the person who made two separate topics in the past year and a half to gauge opinions on how the community reacted to casual players being present in game. As was pointed out in the second post, however, a better question would be the community’s take on competitive players:

So, I’m here now to ask that very question. What is the community’s take on competitive players? Let’s find out with a poll!

  • I think competitive players (and everything they mean for the game) are good!
  • I think competitive players are fine, so long as they don’t interfere with casuals.
  • I don’t like competitive players, but understand they are a necessary evil for the game.
  • I don’t like competitive players, and think they should leave Arcane Odyssey.

As someone firmly in the “so long as they don’t interfere with casuals” camp, I’ve personally experienced being killed because of my decision to be in a relatively small clan with a couple of my friends as well as having my islands taken by competitive sweats with infamy quotas. That’s its own whole separate dilemma though, which also deserves its own separate poll:

  • I believe that Clans should be entirely competitive, and non-competitive clans shouldn’t exist.
  • I believe that Clans should be a mix of competitive and casual, with minimal interaction between both types.
  • I believe that Clans should be a mix of competitive and casual, with some interaction between both types.
  • I believe that Clans should be entirely casual, and if competitive clans exist they should leave casual clans alone.

I will say that for clans to truly be completely casual, there would need to be more pve benefits to clans- such as the fishing hut structure idea Vetex listed on the trello awhile ago to where certain structures in clan islands provide passive buffs to all clan members on the server while they exist.

Anyway, I want to hear your guys’ thoughts on the whole matter. Let me know what you think!

Clans could be for lore reasons, or just between friends
Leave us alone

Tbh this is a difficult debate, But I side with the fact that clans should be competitive, if I’m correct infamy isn’t really a huge issue for smaller clans cuz they don’t really need it to actually get into and be able to build or use other clan features now

I get that a lot of casuals are disappointed with how the game’s state is but if anything you should probably just point your finger at Vetex

The game’s design on replayabilitty is just terrible currently and despite the fact that we were promised changes we are yet to get any meaningful additions.

I think as a whole if AO had more players you’d honestly see less PVPers cuz PVE players used to have wayyy huger counts then PVP, its the issue that the game is just dead with a lack of replayability and it’s just meta pvp slop in the end.

You can’t exactly blame PVP players when your delving into their territory of features too

I mean the whole purpose of clans is to be focused on pvp and competition so

clan building is way too big of a feature to be kept to a minority of the playerbase (competitive players)

One thing I think is weird is that on the Mistral update patchnotes Vetex outright stated clan building was something everyone was supposed to be able to enjoy even if you “aren’t super into PVP.”

And yet, even being in a low-infamy clan puts a target on your back these days. I think infamy really harms the casuals here in the way it’s implemented, because from what I’ve heard the meta is just to go through a server claiming every island in sight, which isn’t great for casual clans.

DEATH TO THEM, DEATH !!! AWAY WITH COMPETITIVE PLAYERS AND MAKE THE GAME ACTuALLY FUN !!!

100 galleons that the delusion that pvp feature shouldnt be pvp focused arises here and starts an argument

personally i think clans should have more pve elements (especially since vetex said he wanted anyone to be able to engage with the mechanic even if they aren’t super into pvp) but understand that pvp clans still exist

While not exactly a pve mechanic I think it’d be nice if you could have non-hostile interactions with other clans, like imagine being able to do cargo runs between your clan’s island and someone else’s for a little infamy and galleons for your clan bank, I think that would be really cool.

I should mention that this one effectively means “I think that competitive players are good, even though they kill casual players unprovoked”

We have clan building, some people just wanna build cities with friends; others want to wage war. I think depending on how much the clan is actually progressing, there should be some severance from them.

this is true for all of AO; as long as your competitive, just go to other competitive people, you aren’t really and gaining any competition from some dude whose just playing to have fun with half baked gear not meant to fight people.

It would be nice if Clans were split into Clans and Crews, and the only real differences were

  • the ability to gain infamy (clan only)
  • the ability to make clans lose infamy (clan only)
  • max size of group (crew at 15, un-upgradable)

all the other features would probably be the same

This is a little funny to me because when I think of competitive people I typically think of those aren’t killing random casuals.

Actually competitive people tend to seek opponents greater than themselves as a test or challenge.

(Technically this means there are competitive PvE players, competitive PvP players, casual PvE players, and casual PvP players imo)

The lunatics who go after monstrous Atlanteans:

that would be implying that every single competitive player is an insane maniac who does nothing but slaughter randoms and would leave nothing to discuss, wouldn’t it?

they’re fun to fight tbh.

Especially if those fish faced bastards take down my beloved crew (80% of the time they do this its when you’re exploring an island), I’m ensuring that cursed ship of their is sunk down 100 feet below mine.

Maybe clans should be solely competitive, and a new type of clan or group system is introduced that is completely separate from competitive clans.

Oh didn’t realize you already wrote this lol

to be fair, a lot of them do

i’ve had interactions with people like that, for example

not every competitive player is like that, but a lot of them are which sucks to me
