Fact for June 21, 2026

I see a lot of talk about .io games in Forum Surveys.

.io is actually the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for the :british_indian_ocean_territory: British Indian Ocean Territory.

Turns out a lot of really small countries and overseas territories have convenient ccTLDs, such as .fm for the :micronesia: Federated States of Micronesia which is frequently used by radio stations[2] and audio sharing websites, most famously Last.fm, and .tv[3] for :tuvalu: Tuvalu, which you all know as part of Twitch’s URL. Approximately 8.4% of Tuvalu’s government revenue is from .tv royalties. Tuvalu is at serious risk of ceasing to exist as a result of rising sea levels. If that were to happen, .tv would have to be recreated as a generic top-level domain, but when a whole country is at risk of going underwater, the things we put at the end of URLs are really the least of our worries.

  1. These things! ↩︎

  2. FM is an abbreviation for frequency modulation btw ↩︎

  3. I really hope you’re not stupid enough to not know what TV stands for ↩︎

Well now I feel stupid. Thanks.

It’s one little sentence in a wall of nerd slop (which will be a recurring theme here lmfao)
I probably would’ve overlooked it if I hadn’t typed it

It’d be funny if we (and Keiko) deleted our messages and just acted like this never happened.

what messages? :cat_with_wry_smile:

Fact for June 22, 2026

Potatoes, tomatoes and eggplants are part of the same genus, Solanum.[1] The genus contains between 1,240 and 1,700 species. The close relation between species allows you to do some awesome botanical shit by grafting a potato plant and tomato plant together, producing the unstoppable force of nature known as the pomato, which is exactly what you think it is. You can now grow french fries and ketchup from the same plant.

  1. I am not named after these since I have a distaste for all three ↩︎

can i make potato sauce to dip with my french fries? or tomato fries to dip in ketchup?

probably wouldn’t taste great though

Fact for June 23, 2026

ISO 7010[1] is basically the standard for graphical symbols on hazard and safety signs.

There are standardized signs for pretty much everything you could imagine.

Tell me this isn’t the most Floridian shit you’ve ever seen.

  1. International Organization for Standardization; their official abbreviation is not an acronym from any language for some reason ↩︎

Fact for June 24, 2026

A chicken gun is essentially a cannon used to test jet engines and aircraft windshields… by shooting a bird carcass[1] into the aircraft at 560 km/h[2]. As you can probably imagine, this is intended to simulate a bird strike. Who said chickens can’t fly?

  1. Usually a chicken. Although the FAA doesn’t require a chicken, they’re the most easily-acquired avian ammunition ↩︎

  2. 350 mph ↩︎
