There is a genus of moth called La. Yes, they named one of the species La cucaracha[1]. La has two other species with puns for names: La cerveza[2] and La paloma[3]
A few other genera[4] with short names exist, such as Ia, a genus of bats, the type species of which, Ia io, has the shortest binomial name of any living species.

this fact is arguably useful because it taught me how to say “the cockroach” “the boar” and “the dove” in spanish
it also taught me the plural form of genus is genera

On that topic you might be wondering where I find these things
most of them are either from random fact books my parents would buy me when I was little or from wikipedia:unusual articles, perhaps my favorite page on that entire site (there is some weird and highkey nasty shit on there though)
sometimes ill stumble upon a fact in a youtube video like the one about the pomato

With enough time spent alive, you do just tend to accumulate a knowledge of strange facts.
It helps if you are the sort of person to think “i wonder if there is anything interesting on the wikipedia page for this somewhat mundane thing”

Hey kids! I’ve got four patriotic facts made in America for the first four days of July, but for today, here’s something to laugh at.
So A&W, an American fast food (and root beer) chain, was seeking to compete with the Golden Arches. Their weapon? A burger with a patty weighing one third of a pound[1] to challenge the McDonald’s quarter pounder[2]. The thought being, their customers would enjoy larger portion sizes and higher quality for, get this, the same price as the quarter pounder. Yet, despite the aggressive marketing campaign, through radio and TV, the burger was a flop.
Of course they had to find out why, so they hired a marketing firm. Taste tests showed that most people actually preferred the A&W burger over McDonald’s[3]. The reality was, most of the participants in various focus groups thought they were getting less meat. People saw 1/3 and assumed that it was a smaller number than 1/4. This wasn’t just some subconscious mistake, either. The people actually told the surveyors that they wouldn’t want to pay the same amount of money for less meat.
When people tell you some American schools, despite being overfunded[4], often don’t have a single math student with a good grade, they’re not joking.

The one-per-day thing provides organization but its also kinda dumb to lock everyone out of posting facts
maybe it could be something like
- anyone can send me a useless fact suggestion through DMs; if I go for it you’ll be credited in the post (alternatively the suggestor could be the one to post it)
- if I fail to post a fact for the day, anyone can post the daily fact (I’m in Central US Time, so please check that before claiming the daily fact)
…so the fact of the day is that some Americans are stupid? I think that’s somewhat well known already…
Which makes the fact even more useless, since everyone already knows the moral of the story!

ive got one prepared for later today
Oops sorry was very busy yesterday and forgot. Anyway, my fact is that 3 attempted Mars missions (out of around 50) have completely missed the planet: Soviet Mars 4 and Mars 7, and Japanese Nozomi. Nozomi continued to go around the sun and collected valuable data on light and radiation stuff, but the other 2 were just never heard from again
