Why do people enjoy shipping characters anyway?

I’ve just never understood the appeal of shipping characters. Admittedly, there is a good chance that I’m actually asexual and am incapable of understanding the appeal of this on a fundamental level, but I’m curious to see you guys explain why so many of you enjoy shipping characters.

I think it’s because people think the two could make a cute or interesting couple, but I can’t make a proper statement on this because I don’t ship characters anyways

Lack of love in their private lives, which they need to disperse on fiction.

that’s what im thinking fr!

Sometimes it doesn’t click until you find a pair you REALLY like. A lot of couples in fiction are just kind of there, put together because why not?

Shipping occurs when you genuinely believe two characters have a good dynamic, one which makes them significantly more interesting as characters.

Though I admit some people just ship for the heck of it and there’s no other reason behind it.

Same reason people hate furries. Too many bad apples created a massive stereotype for people to hate on. When anyone does something bad, and they just so happen to be a furry or a shipper, it only adds to the pile. The same could be said about AO with PVPers being stereotyped as egomanical sweaty piles of lard who live and breathe just to watch that level 50 player rage quit.

Another reason might because of shippers being behind massive dramas that have direct effects on the creator of a type of media. If you hear that your favorite comic book creator might be going on hiatus due to harassment from shippers, you’ll probably jump on the hate train too.

maybe they just like it you fucking weirdo

I did not ask “why people hate shippers?”. I asked “Why do people enjoy shipping characters?”.

my bad, i haven’t had good sleep for the past two weeks

probably because most shippers are hormonal teenagers

After seeing MHA ships I don’t believe that anymore

See the third case of shipping: the writer was horny for one of the characters.

Because there’s some character who could have a pretty interesting dynamic not only friendly but also romantically, and yet you don’t see them interacting that much. Or you SAW them interacting that much and never got more of it, which is specifically why you ship them and imagine them in more scenarios where their dynamic works.

Or sometimes just because it’s fun seeing normally tense characters change due to love or something. I’ve seen Hot Pants x Diego Brando fanart and it honestly melts my heart. For those who don’t know, their first interaction is literally trying to kill each other, Diego goes on the offensive first while Hot Pants just wants to talk, she starts suffocating him with her ability which is basically a shit ton of flesh, but Diego sees the opportunity to take her down WITH him and goes for, what normally in other normal (and not a hostile life or death) situations, would be a kiss, in an attempt to suffocate her as well.

They calm down after Hot Pants reasons with him some more as they’re literally suffocating, and chill out afterwards. They team up and go against the main big bad guy, both doing an amazing team with ingenuity and craftiness.

Now, this wouldn’t work in the story because they’re basically enemies turned allies due to interest in a similar goal. You’d have to change their attitudes for them to interact in a more neutral environment and conditions, for one lower Diego’s slightly big ego.

However, specifically because of that, people like the ship. Diego who we know is a pretty morally questionable person, being a loving partner, and Hot Pants being… well, the only woman we’ve seen Diego interact with, it made for a nice fictional couple.

My ships are too cursed to see the daylight

I ship morden and neviro and also mayor tilly and me

idk i personally think its cringe

especially seeing what the mha fandom have done… shiver me timbers

they live rent free in your head

average mha fan

Yeah he is running from air since bro got none

I usually don’t really care enough about shipping to mind it. What I am not a huge fan of though is when people only think about shipping and nothing else. Characters can have much more interesting interactions when they aren’t in love with each other and some people just don’t seem to get this. It’s a little disappointing whenever characters have very good platonic interactions with each other and the only thing people can think of is them being in a relationship. Or alternatively, when someone waters down a character who wouldn’t normally be in a relationship, just so they can ship them. I feel like if characters are not compatible for shipping normally, that shouldn’t be changed (I have a similar opinion about adding lyrics to songs that don’t have lyrics, but that’s an entirely different discussion)

There are only so many ways that characters can be in love with each other before it gets boring.
2 characters who are very close to each other and have interesting traits that allow them to have unique interactions? You can do things with that. Sure it usually works just as well platonically but it doesn’t really matter.
2 characters that have nothing to do with each other but the person shipping them finds them attractive (which I suspect to be one of the main reasons behind shipping) or wants to see how they might interact? I personally don’t care at all but for some people that’s what they find interesting.
Shipping as many characters as possible with each other because apparently everyone needs to be in a relationship? There is no need for that, probably only 1 or 2 of the pairs actually have anything going on that isn’t the same romantic gestures that got old by the 3rd pair.
