The entire point of using an example that doesn’t hold water is to illustrate the fact that you are downplaying a COMMITMENT to a certain idea because the idea in question is unappealing to the audience. Whether or not the idea holds water doesn’t matter to the comparison, what matters is why you are downplaying it, and the answer is because you think it holds water but you want to downplay how confident you are because it looks bad.

But by emphasizing the figure “100%” that allows you to distance yourself from the point. “I don’t 100% believe it, I only 50% believe it.” This is exaggerating things and it is a child’s tactic. Don’t commit to a point and then downplay your commitment.
